Kuradashi: Japan's Sole Company Recognized in ISO/TR 59031 for Circular Economy Practices

Kuradashi's Remarkable Achievement in Circular Economy

In a significant milestone for Japanese entrepreneurs, Kuradashi, operated by
Kuradashi Co., Ltd., has become the only company in Japan to be selected as a prominent example in the international report "ISO/TR 59031" concerning circular economy practices. The report, released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), is a reputable resource for policymakers, businesses, and researchers worldwide, showcasing successful applied examples of circular economy initiatives. This marks the inaugural recognition of Japan's efforts in food loss reduction as a globally effective circular model.

Understanding ISO/TR 59031

ISO/TR 59031 is part of the ISO 59000 series developed by the ISO Technical Committee 323, focusing on standards related to circular economy. This technical report provides insight through the analysis of diverse case studies worldwide centered on implementing circular economy practices. The report's case studies consider functional economies, service economies, and product-service systems, among other approaches.

Selection Criteria for ISO/TR 59031

The examples gathered in ISO/TR 59031 came from a selection of 121 case studies submitted globally, with 46 coming from Japanese companies. Out of these, only seven were chosen based on a clear demonstration of performance-based approaches. Kuradashi's unique business model, which emphasizes 1.5-tier circulation, was acknowledged for four specific evaluation points:
1. Proven results in food loss and CO2 emissions reduction.
2. High reproducibility and scalability in different countries and sectors.
3. Established transparency, fairness, and traceability for partner companies.
4. The contribution to reducing environmental impact and creating social impact through food loss reduction.

Kuradashi's Business Model

Kuradashi focuses on combating food waste by purchasing items that, while perfectly edible, face challenges in the standard supply chain, such as approaching expiration dates or minor packaging imperfections. These products are sold in the platform's social good marketplace, "Kuradashi," with a portion of profits directed toward various social contribution activities.

Comment from the CEO

Kohei Kawamura, the CEO of Kuradashi, expressed his pride in the recognition, stating: "We are honored to be the only Japanese company acknowledged in the international technical report 'ISO/TR 59031.' Since our inception, we have aimed to be a 'social good company,' providing new value to food that may otherwise be wasted. This adoption validates our business model as a sustainable solution that balances environmental impact reduction and economic viability, recognized by international standards. We are committed to exemplifying Japan's spirit of 'mottainai' (waste not) in our business practices and aspire to be a leading player in the circular economy while addressing social challenges."

Future Aspirations

Kuradashi will continue its mission as a "social good company," focusing on delivering business solutions that excel in social, environmental, and economic values. It aims to contribute significantly to resolving ongoing societal issues and realizing a sustainable future.

What is the Social Good Marketplace "Kuradashi"?

"Kuradashi" is an innovative market platform that enables enjoyable shopping experiences, ensuring benefits for everyone involved. It aims to reduce food waste by offering discounted products that, while still safe for consumption, may face potential waste. Additionally, part of the revenue supports various charitable organizations focused on environmental protection and disaster relief, aligning with all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through this new approach to shopping, Kuradashi connects fun, cost-effective purchases with social good initiatives, creating an entirely new marketplace concept. For more information, visit Kuradashi's website.
