As the nation observes National Preparedness Month, a group of Florida teens has taken a significant step to help families prepare for hurricanes by launching a free resource called Ready Together. This initiative from Kids4Kids Relief, inspired by the tough lessons learned during Hurricane Ian, aims to provide families with essential tools for effective disaster preparedness.

The young founders of Kids4Kids Relief – Sam, Jolie, and Julianna Crimaldi – experienced firsthand the impact of Hurricane Ian. Sam Crimaldi, the primary author and project lead for Ready Together, reflected on the tension families felt as adults managed urgent safety decisions while children were left to grapple with feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. This troubling experience motivated them to create a resource that can better include kids in the preparation process.

Ready Together equips families with practical tools for hurricane planning, including evacuation routes, communication strategies, emergency supplies, medications, and guidelines for handling power outages. The toolkit is structured around a 15-page Quick Reference Guide that can be used independently or as a starter to initiate family discussions. Families can choose to complete a single checklist or explore additional sections as their needs evolve, promoting flexibility amidst uncertainty.

Age-Appropriate Mental Wellness Support

Beyond practical preparations, Ready Together integrates aspects of youth mental health. The resource features 12 short educational videos designed to explain what families might expect before, during, and after a hurricane, fostering an environment of support and inclusivity. Jolie Crimaldi, the organization’s director of community outreach, stated, “Knowing the plan does not put kids in charge of the storm, but it can give them a clearer sense of what to expect.”
