Shibuya Upcycle Workshop: Create Unique Items from Used Advertising Materials

On August 8, 2026, the Shibuya Station Area Management Association in collaboration with Tokyu Media Communications will host a unique upcycling workshop, "Sustainable Work Lab," in Shibuya. With a concept of "Move Shibuya with a Playful Spirit," the association aims to enhance the community’s appeal through various public initiatives.

This workshop is part of their effort to promote environmental sustainability by upcycling discarded advertising banners into usable items. Participants will have the opportunity to create one-of-a-kind items, specifically either a coin case or a cup sleeve, using banners displayed at Shibuya Station that informed the public about revised littering regulations.

The workshop invites attendees to select from a variety of colors and patterns, attaching metal fittings to transform these old materials into personal treasures. Given the unique designs created from cutting techniques, no two items will be identical, making each piece remarkably original.

This workshop is suitable for all ages, encouraging families to take part during the summer holiday. It's not only a fun crafting experience but also an educational opportunity to learn about upcycling, showing participants how to breathe new life into items that might otherwise go to waste.

By reducing waste and promoting resource circulation, this initiative contributes to building a sustainable city.
