JX Metal’s Nature Symbiosis Site: A Beacon for Biodiversity

In a significant recognition, JX Metal Co., Ltd.'s "Kappa-kun Forest/Yoshino" has been certified as a "Nature Symbiosis Site" by Japan's Ministry of the Environment. This achievement underscores the company's commitment to sustainability and biodiversity enhancement, supported by the consulting expertise of Pacific Consultants Co., Ltd.

The Role of Pacific Consultants

Pacific Consultants has played an instrumental role in this development, providing technical support from the initial planning stage through to the certification process. Their consulting services covered essential surveys, preparation of application documents, and support for review meetings to secure the necessary approvals for the site.

The firm’s extensive background in national green infrastructure policies, biodiversity initiatives, and environmental assessment measures has been a cornerstone of their success in these endeavors. Moving forward, Pacific Consultants aims to leverage their expertise to assist companies in utilizing underused natural capital assets effectively while addressing regional issues and contributing to carbon neutrality and the implementation of nature-positive solutions.

Understanding Nature Symbiosis Sites

The Ministry of the Environment initiated the certification of Nature Symbiosis Sites as part of a broader strategy to promote biodiversity conservation through voluntary efforts by private entities. Under the auspices of the newly enacted Regional Biodiversity Enhancement Act, which came into effect in April 2025, areas implementing biodiversity maintenance, recovery, and creation plans can gain recognition as Nature Symbiosis Sites.

These sites are essential for achieving targets such as the Nature Positive initiative, which seeks to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, and the 30by30 goal, aiming to ensure that over 30% of terrestrial and marine areas are effectively conserved by 2030.

Overview of Kappa-kun Forest/Yoshino

Located in the Chūgoku region of Japan's Yamagata Prefecture, the Kappa-kun Forest/Yoshino is a corporate forest managed by JX Metal, situated in a mountainous region previously utilized for mining activities. The site consists of the remnants of the former Yoshino Mine, whose name is reflected in the site’s title. Over the years, this land transitioned into a harmonious ecosystem, characterized by a mosaic of forests and grasslands that now supports high biodiversity.

In the area designated for certification, a diverse array of flora and fauna has been recorded, including 326 species across 95 plant families and numerous bird species such as the rare Japanese sparrowhawk and the white-backed woodpecker. This certified site serves as a critical habitat, safeguarding the homes of threatened species while promoting the preservation of its rich biodiversity.
