New Energy Equity Experiences Leadership Change with Josh Kunkel Succeeding Matt Hankey as CEO

In a significant shift in its leadership, New Energy Equity, a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, has announced that Josh Kunkel will be stepping into the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on June 1, 2025. Kunkel, who is currently the president of the company, will take over the reins from Matt Hankey, the co-founder and CEO, who is moving into a new position as Emerging Technologies Officer within ALLETE, Inc., New Energy's parent company. This transition marks a new chapter for New Energy Equity as it aims to further its impact within the renewable energy field.

Josh Kunkel has been with New Energy Equity since 2020, initially joining as the Vice President of Business Development before his promotion to President in 2022. Kunkel has expressed deep appreciation for Hankey's contributions, acknowledging that the culture and success of New Energy Equity are deeply rooted in Hankey’s vision and leadership. 'Matt has built a truly special company here at New Energy. Our culture, our success, and our steadfast resolve all starts with Matt,' said Kunkel. 'As I step into this role, I am eager to build on the strong foundation that he and the team have established.' Kunkel also highlighted the bright future ahead for New Energy Equity under his leadership.

Matt Hankey, who co-founded New Energy Equity in 2013, has played an instrumental role in guiding the company's growth. He has overseen the implementation of over 270 solar projects across the United States, resulting in a total capacity of 600 megawatts (MW) and significant financial investments exceeding $1.5 billion. During his tenure, Hankey emphasized developing a strong organizational culture, managing a workforce that has now grown to over 125 employees.

ALLETE CEO Bethany Owen, who also chairs the New Energy Equity Board, praised Hankey's contributions to the renewable energy sector. 'Matt has built an outstanding organization and a dynamic team at New Energy Equity. His leadership and vision have made the company a national leader in distributed renewable energy development,' Owen noted. She expressed enthusiasm about Kunkel’s ascension to the CEO position, citing his results-driven approach and commitment to the company's mission.

Hankey also reflected on his time at New Energy Equity, stating, 'Building New Energy Equity with my incredible colleagues is by far the most significant accomplishment of my professional career. I am proud to have led this remarkable team over the last 11 years and look forward to witnessing their continued success under Josh's leadership.'

As Josh Kunkel prepares to step into his new role, he carries with him the expectations of not just maintaining but enhancing the accomplishments that New Energy Equity has achieved so far. With Kunkel at the helm, the company is poised to expand its initiatives in the renewable energy arena, driving further growth and innovation in solar power generation.

New Energy Equity specializes in developing, financing, operating, and managing solar power generation assets, providing clean energy solutions to various customers, including commercial, industrial, municipal, and utility sectors. The company's success is evident in its impressive portfolio and commitment to sustainability, aiming to lead the charge in the ever-evolving renewable energy landscape.
