Sigenergy's Revolutionary 20 MWh Modular Energy Storage Solution
In Burgas, Bulgaria, a significant event unfolded as Sigenergy gathered nearly 300 global energy experts to discuss the future of energy storage in commercial and industrial sectors (CI). This meeting was marked by an exclusive visit to their groundbreaking project, a 20 MWh modular battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Malko Tarnovo. This project serves as a testament to the transformational possibilities and real advantages offered by next-gen energy storage technologies.
The installation was done in collaboration with Trakia MT Ltd., a leading Bulgarian solar company. Their innovative solution was integrated into a solar power plant site, comprising 90 hybrid Sigenergy inverters tailored for commercial and industrial use, paired with the modular storing solution, SigenStack.
Commitment to Clean Energy Transition
Tony Xu, the founder and CEO of Sigenergy, emphasized their mission to hasten the global shift to clean energy through innovative and scalable energy storage solutions. He described this project as a prime example of how advanced battery systems can foster business growth and enable decarbonization across various sectors.
Transformational Modular Storage
Sigenergy’s SigenStack represents a groundbreaking modular approach to CI energy storage. It replaces bulk container systems with stackable battery blocks capable of delivering 12 kWh each. With its plug-and-play connectors and installation requiring no tools, complex wiring, cranes, or heavy machinery, the entire 20 MWh system could be installed in just ten days, achieving full operational capacity within two days.
Galina Peycheva-Miteva, owner of Trakia MT Ltd., commented on the installation process, likening it more to assembling a kit than constructing heavy industrial infrastructure. Such modular designs signify a pivotal moment in energy storage for commercial and industrial applications.
Safety Innovations
Sigenergy's CI BESS stands at the forefront of safety standards. Central to this innovation is the SigenStack system, meticulously designed with safety at every level. Each 12 kWh battery module is equipped with six layers of protection, including temperature sensors, internal fire suppression units, aerogel insulation, decompression valves, high-temperature-resistant insulating pads, and smoke detectors. This setup allows for immediate detection of thermal leaks at the module level, prompting a swift, localized response within seconds.
In contrast, traditional cabinet systems are often not compartmentalized, resulting in a response time that can exceed a minute, thus increasing fire spread risks. By containing incidents at the individual module level, SigenStack significantly enhances system reliability and operational safety.
Its advanced inverter platform features exceptionally quick backflow protection responding in as little as 500 milliseconds and an arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) with a long-range capability to identify faults up to 500 meters away.
To further validate their safety performance, Sigenergy has partnered with Intertek, a global warranty provider, to publish a White Paper on safety guidelines for the CI sectors. Findings confirm full compliance with UL 9540A and IEC 62619 standards, structural integrity under extreme tests, and ongoing operational efficiency exceeding 95%.
Durability and Maintenance-Free Operation
Thanks to a robust safety framework and a modular design, Sigenergy's CI BESS can operate autonomously around the clock. An IP66 rating ensures protection against dust and water, ensuring reliable performance even in harsh environmental conditions. Conversely, conventional cabinet systems often include more vulnerable components that require monthly inspections, biannual replacements, and extensive annual maintenance.
Real-time monitoring through a cloud platform provides complete visibility into system health, energy throughput, and alerts, significantly reducing the need for on-site physical checks. Additionally, the maintenance process has been streamlined, allowing for individual replacement of faulty battery modules within two hours without necessitating complete system diagnostics or technician intervention. This effectively minimizes downtime, simplifies spare parts logistics, and reduces operational costs.
The successful completion of this project underscores Sigenergy's excellence in installation speed, safety, operational reliability, and intelligent management. Looking ahead, Sigenergy is committed to expanding its global footprint and driving the deployment of safer, more efficient, and sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
