Huawei's Tech4Nature Project: A Beacon of Conservation

In a commendable recognition of social impact within the Latin American region, Huawei and its partners received the prestigious Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM award at the M360 LATAM 2026 conference. This accolade celebrates the successful implementation of the Tech4Nature project, dedicated to the conservation of jaguars in the Dzilam de Bravo nature reserve in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

A Powerful Partnership for Nature

The Tech4Nature initiative, a collaboration between Huawei and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), showcases how technology can serve ecological purposes. Launched in 2022, the project integrates advanced technological tools aimed at monitoring and preserving the habitats of the Yucatán's iconic and endangered jaguar population.

Samira Herrera, Huawei Mexico's Director of Communications and Public Relations, expressed the significance of this award: “This recognition reflects the strength of technology when leveraged for the benefit of people and the planet. Tech4Nature Mexico exemplifies how cross-sector collaboration can have a tangible positive impact on communities and biodiversity conservation.”

Innovative Solutions in Biodiversity Conservation

The collaboration includes various stakeholders: Huawei, the Yucatán government, C Minds organization, the Polytechnic University of Yucatán (UPY), and local communities. By employing artificial intelligence, the project facilitates species detection and individual identification while advocating for community-led monitoring and management practices. Through this model, Tech4Nature Mexico demonstrates that technology can drive coordination, collective action, and public policy aimed at nature conservation.

Regina Cervera, Project Coordinator for Tech4Nature Mexico from C Minds, stated, “This initiative deploys tools like AI in service of the ecosystems that sustain our economies and our future.” The project has already identified 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices across the reserve, monitoring over 147 species, including 40 that are endangered. Notably, 16 individual jaguars have been tracked, providing critical insights into their behavior, movement patterns, and necessary protective measures essential for maintaining environmental balance.

Data-Driven Decisions for a Sustainable Future

Huawei’s cloud solutions play an instrumental role in processing and analyzing field data. Alongside the visual documentation of jaguars, the system has cataloged and automatically analyzed more than 100,000 images and 600,000 acoustic recordings. This data not only enriches our understanding of local fauna and ecosystems but also informs better biodiversity conservation strategies, influencing public policy.

Moreover, the protected area has expanded significantly, growing from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares, showcasing the project’s effectiveness.

The fusion of artificial intelligence, cloud storage, and data analytics in the Tech4Nature project has pioneered a sustainable model for conservation science, intertwining scientific innovations with grassroots community involvement. The wireless connectivity solutions from Huawei serve as a crucial component for the transfer of environmental data within Tech4Nature initiatives.

The M360 LATAM 2026 conference, held on May 13-14, gathered regional and global leaders from various sectors, including technology, mobile networks, and governance, to explore how technology can cultivate a better future for all.

The GLOMO LATAM Awards honor change-makers who are innovatively advancing technology, connectivity, and social progress across the region. The recognition of the Tech4Nature project underscores its innovativeness and its substantive social and environmental contributions to Latin America.
