Zoff and JSG 'ME' RAI Project: A Pioneering Initiative for Eye Protection in Schools

A New Era for Eye Health in Schools

In a remarkable initiative aimed at safeguarding the eyes of students, Zoff, a leading eyewear brand in Japan, has collaborated with the esteemed Joshi Seigakuin Junior & Senior High School in Tokyo. This program, geared towards protecting students from harmful UV rays and intense sunlight, marks a groundbreaking milestone in educational practices in Japan, making it the first school to officially allow the wearing of designated sunglasses during school hours, effective October 27, 2025.

The Significance of Sunglasses in Education

This initiative promotes the importance of eye health, fostering a culture where wearing sunglasses becomes a natural habit among students. The project is designed with the perspectives of students and educational stakeholders in mind, aiming to safeguard their eyes while instilling awareness about UV protection.

During a month-long pilot program in August, students were able to wear sunglasses in their daily activities, allowing them to experience firsthand the benefits and necessity of such eyewear. Surveys conducted before and after this test phase reflected significant shifts in attitude towards sunglasses. While around 14% of the participants initially viewed sunglasses as unnecessary, this number dropped dramatically to 0% after the trial. Moreover, the frequency of wear increased, with approximately 80% reporting they would wear sunglasses at least twice a week, compared to only 30% before the pilot.

Comments from students highlighted a newfound appreciation for eye health, such as, "I didn't realize how much I had been stressing my eyes and now I want to take better care of them." Another student noted, "This experience has changed how I view other forms of UV protection, like using an umbrella or wearing arm covers when biking."

Launch Day and Special Events

On the official launch day, a significant ceremony was held with all students and faculty present. A representative of the students emphasized the importance of sunglasses by discussing UV protection and the project's overarching goals—the JSG 'ME' RAI Project, aimed at promoting awareness within the school regarding the importance of protecting one’s eyes. The excitement in the atmosphere was palpable, with many listening intently to their peers' messages.

Led by the school's principal, nearly 600 students donned their sunglasses in a ceremonial moment that symbolized hope for the future. The sunglasses chosen by the students were carefully selected to ensure visibility, equipped with 20% tinted lenses that allow facial expressions to be seen clearly while providing adequate UV protection.

Educational Insight: Understanding UV Effects

Following the ceremony, a special lecture titled "The Impact of UV Rays on Eye Health" was delivered by Professor Naoki Yamamoto from Fujita Medical University. The session informed students about how UV rays can damage the eyes and emphasized the necessity of protection from an early age. A student remarked, "I learned that UV rays can reflect off buildings and asphalt, which can lead to eye damage. Although I already used an umbrella, I realized sunglasses are essential to protect against those reflected rays. I want to share this knowledge with more people."

Voices from the Project Leaders

The initiative is underscored by passionate leaders, including students and teaching staff. One student leader from Joshi Seigakuin stated, "Through our summer sunglasses trial, I realized they are not just a fashion statement but vital for protecting our eyes. Raising awareness about the importance of UV protection from a young age is crucial, and I wanted to lead this project to share this knowledge widely. I believe in a hands-on approach where each student learns to plan and act together."

Naoki Okamura, head of the physical education department, noted, "Our philosophy revolves around fostering empathy towards others. This project aims not only to introduce sunglasses but to allow students to collaborate in thinking and acting towards societal awareness of eye health."

Professor Yamamoto also emphasized, "UV rays are constant throughout the year, and over half of the UV exposure individuals receive occurs before they reach 18. Sunglasses are a simple yet effective means of protecting one’s health. Protecting your eyes is ultimately about securing your future."

Initiatives Beyond the Classroom

In addition to the in-class initiatives, Zoff has launched a dedicated social media campaign under the account name “After School Sunglasses Club” on Instagram and TikTok. This platform aims to raise awareness about skin protection against UV rays and the significance of eye health, sharing students' experiences and insights into incorporating sunglasses into their daily lives. The first collaborative video with a popular social media account aims to depict authentic student lifestyles showcasing sunglasses as a natural accessory.
