Recently, Lifestyle Guide, managed by Wave Dash Corporation, announced the results of the 'Top Cities to Live in Japan 2026'. This ranking is based on a survey conducted from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, where 12,789 members selected their favorite municipalities.

In this year's rankings, there were no changes in the top three cities; however, Setagaya Ward dropped from 4th to 7th place, while Osaka City climbed from 6th to 4th. Additionally, Kyoto City made a notable return to the top 10, moving up from 13th to 9th place.

Osaka's rise in the rankings can likely be attributed to several factors, including the redevelopment of the 'Umekita area' and the anticipated integrated resort (IR) plans. The forthcoming World Expo 2025 that will be hosted in Osaka and Kansai is expected to boost the city’s recognition and visibility, contributing to its improved ranking.

On the other hand, Kyoto has recently experienced a surge in inbound tourism, prompting discussions about the impact on its living environment. The improvements in its reception capabilities possibly played a role in enhancing the city's image and rankings.

Conversely, Setagaya Ward, despite its strong brand reputation, may have fallen in the rankings due to its lower expectations for growth when compared to other cities, leading to its decline in position.

In the 86th to 100th rankings, cities like Kariya and Beppu, which previously had been featured in the 'Most Desired Cities to Return' rankings of 2025, managed to enter the list again. This showcases the ebb and flow of city rankings and encourages residents to compare past and current results to observe changes based on periods and criteria.
