Nerd Apply Welcomes Dr. Erwin Hesse as Director of Impact to Transform College Admissions Process
Nerd Apply Appoints Dr. Erwin Hesse as Director of Impact
In a significant move, Nerd Apply, a leading platform dedicated to reshaping the college admissions landscape through data-driven counseling, has announced the appointment of Dr. Erwin Hesse as its inaugural Director of Impact. This role not only reinforces the company's mission but also aims to foster relationships with various educational bodies, including school districts, higher education institutions, and policymakers. Dr. Hesse will be pivotal in promoting legislation that enhances admissions processes, ultimately positioning Nerd Apply as the authority on transforming admissions data into impactful student outcomes.
Dr. Erwin Hesse brings a wealth of experience, spanning over 15 years in various capacities within the higher education sector. His career trajectory includes practitioner roles, institutional leadership, policy formulation, and published contributions to the field. Previously, he directed the Center for Innovation in College Admission at NACAC, where he played a crucial role in rethinking the underlying frameworks of the college application process. His influence extended beyond conceptual changes; he co-authored Maryland Senate Bill 324, a landmark legislation establishing Direct Admission—a pioneering initiative in the United States.
A fundamental aspect of Dr. Hesse’s work has been his commitment to addressing educational inequalities, epitomized by his co-founding of Admissions Gambit. This initiative uniquely combines paid college counseling for a fee with free coaching for first-generation and low-income students, showcasing his belief that disparities in admission outcomes stem from information gaps rather than student capabilities. Additionally, he was honored as one of the Presidential Obama USA Leaders in 2023, undergoing an intensive values-driven leadership initiative, culminating in a meeting with President Obama himself. At Nerd Apply, Dr. Hesse intends to channel his expertise toward forging productive research partnerships, advocating legislative changes, and representing the company at national conferences, all while leveraging Nerd Apply’s expansive data resources.
“I have witnessed the intricacies of the college admissions process from multiple perspectives,” stated Dr. Hesse in his first address since taking on the new role. “Students face challenges such as deciding whether to submit their scores to test-optional schools or crafting concise descriptions of their extracurricular activities, all while lacking access to examples of past successful or unsuccessful applications. Nerd Apply bridges this gap by providing real outcomes as shared insights, equipping counselors and their communities with a clearer understanding of what success entails in college admissions.”
The appointment of Dr. Hesse is a testament to Nerd Apply’s ongoing commitment to harnessing technology and expert insights to improve student admission results on a larger scale. As the organization enhances its presence throughout the country, with over 1000+ trusted counselors and an extensive database of more than 250,000 real applications, Dr. Hesse is poised to translate this data into meaningful outcomes for the communities that stand to gain the most.
The co-founders of Nerd Apply, Braden and Cooper Weissman, expressed their enthusiasm for Dr. Hesse's new role, emphasizing his profound impact on the education system. “His career has been dedicated to improving educational landscapes, and we are thrilled that he has chosen to contribute his expertise to our mission. Dr. Hesse’s multi-faceted understanding of this sector—spanning institutional operations, policy dynamics, and the nuances of counseling—will be invaluable in materializing our vision.”
Prior to his tenure at NACAC, Hesse held significant leadership positions at prestigious institutions such as Amazon, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland. He holds a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University, a master's in public administration from the University of Baltimore, and a bachelor's in criminology from the University of Maryland. Currently, he serves on the National Advisory Council for the Johns Hopkins School of Education and was awarded a grant in 2022 from the NewSchools Venture Fund for his pioneering work in admission consulting.
