Discovery Park of America and TVA Collaborate on New Energy Exhibit for Future Innovators
Discovery Park of America Unveils New Energy Exhibit
Discovery Park of America, a prominent educational destination in Union City, Tennessee, has announced a significant milestone in its ambitious project, Megawatts: The Exhibit. This new permanent energy gallery aims to inspire curiosity about energy among children and adults alike, with an emphasis on STEM education. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has reinforced its commitment to this initiative by expanding support, thus propelling the project into its next stages of development.
The project has officially kicked off with the renowned museum design firm Solid Light, known for crafting immersive and impactful exhibits. The collaborative effort intends to create an engaging learning environment that will open its doors in late 2027.
A Focus on STEM Learning
The Megawatts Exhibit is designed to introduce visitors, particularly children aged ten and under, to the multifaceted world of energy production, transmission, and utilization. According to Scott Williams, the President and CEO of Discovery Park, the exhibit will encompass interactive storytelling, hands-on experiences, and exploration that furthers understanding of energy's role in our lives. Williams expressed, "This exhibit is critical in motivating the next generation of engineers and innovators who will play a key role in reshaping our energy landscape."
During TVA's recent visit to Discovery Park, representatives expressed their enthusiasm for the project and highlighted the importance of fostering interest in STEM fields among youth. Taquiya Thompson, a Manager of Government and Community Relations for TVA, emphasized the region's need for innovative thinkers in energy: "We're excited to witness this new energy gallery inspire curiosity and encourage STEM learning within our communities."
Immersive and Engaging Elements
Set in an imaginative world termed the Powerverse, the exhibit will feature characters from the Energy League, whose mission is to elucidate various energy sources like solar, wind, geothermal, and fossil fuels. Through imaginative storytelling, the exhibit aims to simplify complex scientific concepts, making them accessible for young learners. Guests will embark on journeys exploring how these energy forms impact our daily lives while discovering scientific principles like electricity and the electric grid.
Solid Light’s involvement is poised to elevate the experience through their innovative design. Chris Mozier, COO of Solid Light, stated, "We are committed to transforming the traditional museum experience into an interactive exploration that resonates with visitors long after they've left our exhibit."
Commitment to Education and Community
Since its founding in 2013, Discovery Park has welcomed over 2.25 million visitors, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for science and cultural enrichment in Tennessee. The new energy gallery aligns with the Park's mission to render complex subjects approachable and relevant.
In addition to TVA, other key partners, such as Union City Electric and Gibson Electric Membership Corporation, are collaborating to bring the Megawatts Exhibit to fruition. Williams noted, "This partnership is an investment in the future, crucial for nurturing the next cadre of scientists, technicians, and innovators."
The Megawatts Exhibit is not only an educational milestone but a community initiative aimed at empowering youth through understanding energy—a critical component of modern life. By stimulating interest in STEM fields, this project aims to create a pathway for future careers in engineering and technology.
As the design phase commences this summer, the Discovery Park team is optimistic about the possibilities this exhibit will unveil. Organizations interested in supporting this pioneering initiative can reach out to Bethany Brock, the Director of Development at Discovery Park, via email.
The journey towards unveiling The Megawatts Exhibit is a testament to Discovery Park of America's commitment to fostering a love for learning in science, technology, and history, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
