Upstage Secures $45 Million to Fuel AI Innovations
San Jose, California — August 20, 2025
Global AI powerhouse Upstage has announced the successful closing of a $45 million Series B bridge financing round, featuring notable investors such as Amazon and AMD. This new investment pushes Upstage's total capital raised to an impressive $150 million, aimed at rapidly developing its next-generation language model,
Solar, enhancing document AI products, and expanding its go-to-market strategy across the Asia-Pacific region and the United States.
Collaboration with AWS to Catalyze Growth
In conjunction with the new funding, Upstage also formalized a
Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) with AWS. Under this agreement, the collaboration is set to expedite the development and deployment of Solar-based solutions and AI applications across the Asia-Pacific and U.S. markets. As the designated primary cloud provider for Upstage, AWS will facilitate access to advanced services including Amazon SageMaker and the innovative AWSTrainium and Inferentia chips.
Amazon is also investing as a minority stakeholder, further solidifying the technical alignment and long-term strategic partnership.
Sung Kim, Upstage’s co-founder and CEO, stated, “Upstage and AWS have cultivated a robust partnership over the years. This agreement marks a new chapter in accelerating AI innovation globally. With AWS as our strategic ally, we aim to deliver safe, intelligent, and high-performance AI solutions to a wider range of organizations.”
The focus will particularly emphasize providing top-tier generative AI solutions tailored for regulated sectors, such as public and financial industries, optimizing security, performance, and compliance. The collaboration will also include joint go-to-market strategies and co-selling efforts in the APAC region and the U.S.
Jon Jones, VP of AWS Startups and Venture Capital, added, “We are thrilled to support Upstage in unlocking new innovations. By leveraging AWS's services, Upstage can enhance efficiency and productivity while safeguarding data for various organizations, including those in the public sector.”
Transforming Operations with Document Intelligence
At the core of Upstage's strategy is
Document Intelligence, a product designed to convert unstructured documents into structured formats compatible with large language models (LLMs). This includes tools like
Document Parse for structuring documents and
Information Extract to extract essential data from texts. Upstage’s technology boasts over 95% accuracy in processing intricate document types, including insurance contracts and financial statements, thereby reducing manual effort and streamlining decision-making processes.
In contrast to conventional OCR, which merely extracts text, Upstage’s Document Intelligence understands the layout, purpose, and semantics of documents, offering outputs that are practical for real-world applications. The recent funding and collaboration with AWS are expected to further accelerate the expansion of the Solar LLM family. Solar consists of high-performance lightweight LLMs developed specifically for the Amazon SageMaker environment and available on the Amazon Bedrock Marketplace. Additionally, the
Universal Information Extractor will be accessible through AWS Marketplace for effective document comprehension.
AI Solutions Tailored for the Japanese Market
In Japan, Upstage is rolling out its Japanese language-focused LLM,
