SSFF & ASIA 2025: A Celebration of Short Films
The
Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA) is set to commence its anticipated Fall International Short Film Festival from
October 22, 2025. This festival, recognized by the U.S. Academy Awards, stands as one of the largest international short film festivals in Asia. The event will feature an impressive lineup of over
30 films, including Grand Prix winners, Oscar contenders, and new award-winning pieces, ensuring an unforgettable experience for film enthusiasts.
In partnership with Tokyo's government, this year's festival will be held at multiple venues including
Akasaka Intercity Conference,
Tokyo Photographic Art Museum Hall, and
LIFORK Harajuku, with a global online theater broadcast for wider audiences.
An Exhilarating Lineup
The festival's lineup is rich in diversity, showcasing genres that delve into themes such as Art, AI, shocking narratives, and LGBTQ+ stories. Special attention will be given to the world premiere of
Yuka Sugai’s short films, “
Continuation of Dreams” and “
Gunshot in the Afternoon,” produced by young directors from Bunpuku Co., Ltd.
In an exciting special event, these films will be screened alongside a talk by Sugai herself, who will share insights on her experiences in the short film industry and engage with audiences on the creative process behind her works.
Additionally, the festival will screen
“How to Open the Door”, a short film produced and starred in by famed Korean actor
Kim Nam-gil, best known for his role in “The Fiery Priest.” This year's festival stands out not only for its featured film selections but also its incorporation of special curated programs that highlight works by female directors from
New Zealand,
India,
Indonesia,
Brazil, and
Taiwan in association with the Tokyo International Film Festival.
A Unique Viewing Experience
This autumn, attendees can experience a new format with the
One-Day Pass, allowing them to enjoy up to
12 screenings in a single day without interruption, catering to both committed viewers and casual attendees looking to catch a few highlights. Whether you're able to enjoy the full schedule or just a few select films, the festival promises a refreshing approach to short film viewing.
The films will include the award-winning short films recognized during the
SSFF & ASIA 2025, alongside a curated selection based on themes like stunning visuals and poignant storytelling. This includes the Grand Prix-winning film,
“Torn Pantyhose”, directed by
Fabian Munsterhjelm, and
“ABYSS”, recognized for its compelling narrative.
Special Events and Seminars
The festival aims to empower and showcase emerging filmmakers with an inclusive approach. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussions through a series of seminars designed to explore the
commercial market for short films, including insights from festival director
