Enhance Your Life with Plant Distillation: A New Guide on Aromatherapy

Discovering a New Way to Live with Plant Distillation

On August 28, Sekai Bunka Sha will launch a new book titled Living with Herbs: A Beginner's Guide to Distillation by Yukari Kikuchi. This book introduces readers to the art of cultivating plants and extracting their fragrances for everyday life. As the interest in local plant distilleries and the experience of distillation has grown, more people are becoming acquainted with this enriching practice.

In recent years, distillation has become increasingly accessible, with more facilities emerging that celebrate the bounty of regional flora. Kikuchi’s book provides insight into the wonders of hydrosols, which are aromatic waters resulting from the distillation of plants. From basics of distillation at home to practical self-care routines for each season, this guide aims to incorporate the soothing fragrances of nature into daily life.

The Healing Power of Plant Aromas

Fragrances have the ability to soothe tension and shift our moods, serving as an ever-present companion in our daily lives. The technique of plant distillation allows us to harness these scents directly from nature. The book is crafted to give both beginners and enthusiasts a clear understanding of how to distill plants at home and utilize hydrosols effectively.

Kikuchi points out, “In Europe, aromatic hydrosols are appreciated as a form of plant therapy. However, in Japan, the cultural practice of distilling plants at home and integrating their benefits into daily life is still not widely recognized.” With everyday kitchen tools, it's surprisingly simple to extract a single drop of aromatic goodness without requiring specialized distillation equipment.

A Collection of Seasonal Self-Care Recipes

The book features approximately 50 self-care recipes that utilize aromatic hydrosols. From seasonal recipes addressing spring allergies and respiratory health to soothing mists for new beginnings, the guide covers a wide array of topics. Readers will find recipes designed for summertime cool-downs, insect repellent strategies, baby care, pregnancy support, menopause, feminine care, and household cleaning solutions. This comprehensive resource empowers readers to creatively integrate plant aromas into various aspects of their lives.

Embracing a Life with Plants

Yukari Kikuchi made a life-changing decision in her 40s to move to Minami Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, driven by a desire to live closer to plants. Surrounded by rich nature and pure spring water, she has been actively distilling plants and sharing their benefits. This book encapsulates the wisdom gained from her daily practices and highlights the richness found in moments spent in nature. Inside, readers can find recommendations for local distilleries and herb gardens, providing a glimpse into the beautiful landscapes of Minami Aso with every turn of the page.

The Birth of SOMA — A Home Distillation Unit

In an exciting development, Kikuchi has introduced SOMA, a home plant distillation unit, culminating three years of research and refinement. This unit aims to connect the joy of growing plants to a holistic lifestyle. Plant distillation is not just a method for extracting fragrance; it is also a meditative practice that fosters a deeper connection with nature and its unique offerings. Developed in collaboration with an established glass manufacturer, SOMA strives to make the experience of distillation more accessible and user-friendly. (Patent pending)
