Viettel's Role as a Platinum Member of the OpenInfra Foundation
The OpenInfra Foundation has announced Viettel as its latest Platinum Member, marking a pivotal moment in the advancement of open-source cloud infrastructure in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Viettel, recognized as the largest telecommunications and technology entity in Vietnam, reaffirms its dedication to open-source innovations through this enhanced partnership.
Viettel's Commitment to Open Source
Viettel's decision to join the OpenInfra Foundation not only underscores its strategic focus on advancing cloud services but also emphasizes its commitment to embedding open-source principles into its operations. As a leader in secure and sovereign cloud services built on OpenStack, Viettel is well positioned to leverage its resources in the global OpenInfra community, propelling the adoption of open technologies across various sectors including government and enterprise.
With over 50,000 employees operating in 11 countries, Viettel stands out as one of the most valuable telecommunications brands globally, ranking first in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, and 16th worldwide. This membership will empower Viettel Networks, its subsidiary responsible for engineering and operating cloud platforms, to further enhance its cloud infrastructure that currently runs on OpenStack across multiple private cloud clusters.
Infrastructure at Scale
Viettel Networks operates an impressive infrastructure with 15 OpenStack-powered private cloud clusters. These clusters accommodate more than 3,500 physical servers, over 112,000 cores, and a vast amount of storage exceeding 11,000 TB, establishing one of the largest OpenStack footprints in the Southeast Asian region. Additionally, their commitment to excellence has led to being the first cloud provider to comply with the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications' e-Government Cloud standards, reflecting its leadership in secure cloud offerings tailored to national digital transformation efforts.
Enhancing Customer Experience
Hieu Le, Chief Information Officer at Viettel Networks, articulated the essence of Viettel's cloud strategy, stating, “Open source is at the heart of Viettel's cloud strategy.” This approach provides customers with unmatched freedom and control that proprietary platforms may not offer, which is crucial for making informed decisions about their data and technology infrastructure. Becoming a Platinum Member of the OpenInfra Foundation further solidifies Viettel's vision of nurturing open innovation and supplying reliable, sovereign cloud infrastructure for not just Vietnam but the entire region.
The Viettel Cloud services cater specifically to businesses and organizations across various sectors, including offerings like Viettel Cloud Server, Viettel Dedicated Cloud, and AI/ML platforms, all developed on the high-performance framework of OpenStack. The company plans to significantly expand its Tier III+ data center infrastructure, aiming for more than 60,000 racks in operation across 24 data centers by 2030, providing a total floor area of 324,000 m².
OpenInfra Foundation's Perspective
Thierry Carrez, general manager of the OpenInfra Foundation, highlighted Viettel's vital role in the national cloud transformation in Southeast Asia, identifying it as a focal point for open-source infrastructure advancements. The foundation encompasses over 100 organizations committed to building communities focused on developing open-source infrastructure software, and Viettel’s expertise in cloud operations and cybersecurity is bound to enrich this ecosystem.
