Cboe Introduces First Cash-Settled Options Product for Spot Bitcoin on December 2

Cboe's Groundbreaking Cash-Settled Options for Spot Bitcoin

Cboe Global Markets, a leading network in derivatives and securities trading, is set to launch the first cash-settled index options based on the price of spot Bitcoin, effective Monday, December 2. This innovative product will exclusively be listed and traded on the Cboe Options Exchange, providing a new avenue for investors to navigate the world of cryptocurrencies.

The options are grounded in the newly developed Cboe Bitcoin U.S. ETF Index, which is designed to reflect the performance of spot Bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) listed on U.S. exchanges. This index is characterized as a modified market cap-weighted index, tracking a basket of spot Bitcoin ETFs and correlating closely with the price movements of Bitcoin, thus offering a reliable measure for those interested in this asset.

Market participants will gain unprecedented access to exposure through these options, strategically allowing them to capitalize on price fluctuations, manage their risks, and express their market outlook regarding Bitcoin's movements. A significant aspect of this launch is that the index options are cash-settled; this means that positions will be closed in cash upon expiration, which eliminates the logistical complexities involved with the physical delivery of Bitcoin ETFs.

The options will also adopt a European-style exercise format, permitting exercise solely on the expiration date. This feature minimizes the risk of early assignment, thus enhancing the trading experience. Along with options on the standard-sized index, Cboe plans to unveil Cboe Mini Bitcoin U.S. ETF Index options, which are valued at one-tenth of the standard options. These mini options aim to provide flexibility in managing basis risks while appealing to varied portfolio sizes.

Additionally, Cboe will roll out cash-settled FLEX options, allowing traders the capability to customize vital contract details, such as exercise price, exercise style, and expiration date. This flexibility offers an advantage, potentially enabling traders to hold larger positions than the typical limits set by standard options contracts.

Rob Hocking, Cboe's Global Head of Product Innovation, highlighted the timeliness and effectiveness of this new suite of options. He stated, "Our offering stands as a timely and compelling solution for traders looking to efficiently gain exposure to spot Bitcoin. We believe the cash-settlement benefits, coupled with multiple index sizes and FLEX options, will cater to the diverse needs of both institutional players and retail traders who aim to either capitalize on or hedge against Bitcoin's price swings."

This introduction signifies a continued expansion of Cboe's offerings within digital assets derivatives, a sector that already includes cash-settled futures for Bitcoin and Ether. These futures are expected to transition to the Cboe Futures Exchange by the first half of 2025, pending the necessary regulatory reviews. Moreover, Cboe's BZX Equities Exchange serves as a leading venue for spot U.S. cryptocurrency ETFs, showcasing its significant market share in trading both spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs available in the country.

Adam Inzirillo, Cboe's Global Head of Data and Access Solutions, emphasized the integration within Cboe's exchange ecosystem. He noted, "Our latest initiative reflects Cboe's comprehensive platform capabilities—from trading spot Bitcoin ETFs to facilitating index creation, all culminating in the launch of innovative products such as the Cboe Bitcoin U.S. ETF Index Options. Our commitment to leveraging our platform's strengths offers customers a competitive edge in the marketplace."
