In a significant stride towards sustainability in aviation, Syzygy Plasmonics, an innovator in light-driven Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) technology, has established a strategic agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group. This alliance aims to develop a pipeline of SAF projects throughout Latin America, reinforcing a commitment to eco-friendliness while addressing the aviation sector's pressing carbon emissions issues.

Framework Agreement and Initial Project


Under this newly inked framework agreement, IFC is set to provide crucial technical and commercial advisory services as Syzygy advances its various projects. The collaboration outlines a clear pathway for further synergies, aiming to scale Syzygy’s SAF technologies across the region efficiently. At the forefront of these initiatives is the NovaSAF-1 project, planned for Durazno, Uruguay. This commercial-scale facility represents Syzygy’s initial practical application of its innovative technology and is poised to redefine sustainable aviation fuel production utilizing renewable electricity and biogas resources.

The Pivotal Role of Sustainable Aviation Fuel


The aviation industry stands at a crossroads, confronted with the necessity for scalable, lower-carbon alternatives to traditional jet fuels. By integrating Syzygy's groundbreaking light-driven technology with the abundant renewable energy resources prevalent in Latin America, the company is strategically positioned to expedite the widespread adoption of SAF in emerging markets. Syzygy’s technology diverges from conventional industrial methods which depend on fossil fuels, employing renewable energy to operate light-driven reactors that convert biogas into SAF. This radical approach could cut lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by a staggering 90% compared to standard jet fuel.

“The shift towards low-carbon aviation hinges upon innovative technologies that are both commercially viable and scalable,” underscores Raphaël Eskinazi, IFC’s Regional Investment Manager for Manufacturing and Forests in Latin America and the Caribbean. Eskinazi emphasizes the IFC's commitment to facilitating this transition through the support of pioneering projects that can leverage private capital, front new business models, and assist broader market acceptance in developing economies.

Syzygy’s Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Best, heralds this partnership as validation of Syzygy’s potential to disrupt the aviation fuel market. He asserts that the convergence of innovative technology, a robust project pipeline, and comprehensive commercial agreements positions Syzygy for future success. “IFC’s involvement underscores the viability of our strategy in building a sustainable aviation fuel infrastructure throughout Latin America,” Best stated.

Commercial Agreements and Future Aspirations


Syzygy's regional expansion has already begun to gain traction through pivotal commercial agreements. Trafigura has signed a binding offtake agreement for the entire production output of NovaSAF-1, while joint agreements with Trafigura and World Fuel Services have been established for future capacity reservations across the region. Additionally, Syzygy has secured crucial feedstock agreements with several partners, including Estancias del Lago and Geo Bio Gas Carbon. These strategic partnerships bolster the company’s vision of reaching an ambitious target of up to one million metric tons in annual SAF production capacity in Brazil by 2035.
