Experience the Enchanting Ueno Toshogu Shrine Peony Festival in Spring 2026

Ueno Toshogu Shrine Peony Festival 2026

The Ueno Toshogu Shrine, located within Ueno Park in Taito, Tokyo, is set to host its 47th Peony Festival from April 4 to May 6, 2026. This annual event has been a highlight for flower enthusiasts, attracting over 30,000 visitors last year alone.

At the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a stunning display of over 500 peonies, representing more than 110 varieties sourced from Japan, China, the United States, and France. Each day, the flowers will showcase a unique transformation, allowing guests to witness the beauty of these blossoms in bloom. From classic red and pink hues to the rare yellow varieties, the festival promises a vibrant floral experience.

Nestled within the greenery and warmth of spring, the peony garden provides a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls. Daily updates on the blooming conditions will be shared on the festival's official Instagram account, ensuring guests are informed about the best times to visit.

Featured Rare Varieties

This year's festival will feature several rare peony varieties:
  • - Marimo: A unique green peony resulting from the natural crossbreeding of Chinese and Japanese cultivars.
  • - Zipangu: A delightful yellow double-blooming variety noted for its fragrance.
  • - Shakudo no Kagayaki: With petals showcasing a rare orange tint mixed with pink, this variety is striking and unique.
  • - Haru no Yosooi: An exquisite bloom reflecting the elegance of peonies.

The peony flower, revered as a symbol of wealth and prosperity, carries a rich cultural history. Believed to have been introduced to Japan from China during the Nara period, this flower has inspired poetry and art throughout Japanese literature and culture. From celebrated haiku to intricate family crests, peonies hold a prestigious place in Japan's artistic heritage.

Traditional Edo Architecture and Scenic Views

Festival-goers can enjoy traditional Edo architecture as they marvel at the old Kangenji five-story pagoda and the stone lanterns lining the Toshogu Shrine path. The serene Japanese gardens, adorned with Karesansui landscapes, provide a unique backdrop for appreciating peonies and experiencing the charm of Edo-period culture.

Creative Photography Spots

The garden will feature various vibrant installations, including colorful koi flags, decorative plant arrangements, and bonsai trees, providing perfect spots for photography. Visitors are invited to capture the essence of spring alongside the blooming peonies.

Additional Spring Blossoms

Aside from peonies, the garden will also showcase approximately 20 varieties of other spring flowers throughout the festival's duration. Expect to see beautiful blooms such as:
  • - Rhododendron: From early to late April.
  • - Peonies: Continuing to blossom from late April to mid-May.

Insights from the Garden Director

In preparation for the Peony Festival, the garden team has dedicated a year to nurturing the peonies.
