TOMOKO SAITO AROMATIQUE STUDIO Participates in Environmental Experiment at Haneda Airport

TOMOKO SAITO AROMATIQUE STUDIO at Haneda Airport

TOMOKO SAITO AROMATIQUE STUDIO, a design studio specializing in aroma using natural essential oils, is embarking on an exciting initiative at Haneda Airport's Terminal 2. This project, part of the co-creation efforts under the "terminal.0 HANEDA" development hub, aims to conduct an experimental trial focused on enhancing the environment at the airport's security check area.

From April 1st to June 30th, 2026, the studio will test how scents can alleviate the psychological burdens often faced by travelers in security zones, known for their stress-inducing atmosphere. The plan is to utilize the sense of smell, which can quickly evoke emotions and memories, to improve passenger comfort during their airport experience.

Security checks are typically associated with crowding, long waits, and the nervous tension that accompanies them, making these spaces psychologically taxing for both travelers and security personnel. The endeavor at Haneda Airport seeks to investigate how sensory stimuli such as lighting, audio, visual elements, and aromatics can work together to ease these burdens and enhance the overall experience.

In response to these challenges, TOMOKO SAITO AROMATIQUE STUDIO has taken a thoughtful approach to designing a scent that is suitable for security environments. Instead of opting for strong, overwhelming fragrances, the focus is on creating a subtle aroma that induces a moment of calm and deep breathing, aimed at improving the overall air quality and environment.

The selected aroma blends essential oils from various Japanese trees, such as hinoki (cypress), sugi (cedar), and matsu (pine), delicately layered with citrus essences. This scent has been designed with careful consideration of the overall spatial design concept, ensuring compatibility with the interior created by the design firm, Tanseisha. Feedback and insights collected from discussions at the "terminal.0 HANEDA" consortium meetings played a vital role in shaping this fragrance. The goal is to bring a soothing, forest-like quality, reminiscent of Japan's natural beauty, to the often sterile and industrial-feeling security areas, enhancing the travel experience.

The experiment will also leverage a newly developed "Aroma Diffusion Simulator" in collaboration with partner companies that will account for airflow, human traffic, and spatial volume in the airport environment. This scientific approach will allow for the visualization of aromatic diffusion and help determine the optimal concentration for safety and comfort in public spaces.

TOMOKO SAITO AROMATIQUE STUDIO is committed not only to elevating the olfactory experience but also to envisioning the practicality of implementing these innovations as part of social infrastructure. The aim is to redefine the airport experience with newfound value for travelers.

Experiment Overview at Haneda Airport
