Chengdu's Rise as a Global Innovation Center
Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province in southwestern China, has firmly established itself as a leading global hub for innovation. In the latest Global Innovation Index of 2025, Chengdu ranked an impressive 24th, showcasing its national ambitions in science and technology during the 14th Five-Year Plan, which spans from 2021 to 2025.
A significant part of China's national strategy focuses on transforming the Chengdu-Chongqing region into an influential center for scientific and technological innovation. The Western (Chengdu) Science City plays a pivotal role in this transformation, creating a high-level innovation ecosystem that encompasses a national laboratory, four national innovation centers, ten major scientific infrastructures, and four Tianfu laboratories.
Currently, there are 96 national innovation platforms active in Chengdu, including prestigious establishments such as the National Precision Medicine Industrial Innovation Center and the National Supercomputing Center. Additionally, the city is home to 27 national-scale research institutions and 65 collaborative innovation projects launched in partnership with universities and research institutes.
Chengdu is actively nurturing future industries, having implemented guidelines for 24 sectors, which include humanoid robotics and flexible display technology. The city further enhanced its innovation landscape in July of this year by establishing a 100 billion yuan fund (approximately $14.1 billion USD) aimed at supporting high-tech enterprises.
