FAIR Health Welcomes New Board Members

FAIR Health, Inc. has made significant strides in its leadership with the recent election of Lynn Barr, MPH, and Zirui Song, MD, PhD, to its Board of Directors. This highly regarded nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing impartial information to improve the quality, access, and affordability of healthcare. With their wealth of experience, Barr and Song are expected to advance the mission of FAIR Health substantially.

Who Are the New Directors?

Lynn Barr

Lynn Barr is a noteworthy figure in healthcare reform and entrepreneurship. She has spent much of her career focused on improving rural and safety-net healthcare systems, transforming them into effective and sustainable entities. Barr has played a pivotal role in four startup companies and has overseen 12 medical innovations through the FDA, successfully bringing them to market. After earning her MPH in Health Policy and Management from UC Berkeley, she served as the chief information officer for a rural hospital in California. During her tenure, she established a cooperative network among eight rural hospitals and several health centers, culminating in the creation of the nation’s first National Rural Accountable Care Organization (ACO).

Her entrepreneurial spirit flourished with the founding of Caravan Health, which was designed to enhance ACO services. This initiative was instrumental in developing nationwide programs that improved patient care and boosted financial success for providers, saving Medicare over $500 million while returning an estimated half to rural providers across 44 states. After selling Caravan Health, now part of CVS ACO, Barr founded the Barr Family Foundation, focusing on rural health, education, and environmental issues. Additionally, she is a commissioner on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), where she advises Congress on Medicare policy.

Zirui Song

Dr. Zirui Song brings his academic and clinical expertise to FAIR Health's Board. He serves as a Professor of Health Care Policy and Medicine at Harvard Medical School while simultaneously practicing at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). His research dives into the health and economic impacts of public and private sector policies on healthcare accessibility and affordability. As a leading figure in healthcare policy, Dr. Song’s work touches on Medicare and has influence on state-level healthcare initiatives, particularly regarding affordability.

Moreover, he directs admissions for the PhD program in Health Policy at Harvard and oversees the Health Policy track of the MGH Internal Medicine Residency. Dr. Song is committed to educating future leaders in healthcare policy, teaching courses to medical, dental, and executive education students. His editorial contributions include positions as Associate Editor for JAMA Health Forum and membership on the Editorial Board for Health Affairs and Health Services Research. His election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the National Academy of Social Insurance further reflects his standing in the medical and academic communities.

Impact of Their Election

Robert Parke, Chair of FAIR Health's Board of Directors, expressed his enthusiasm about the new appointments, stating, "We are excited to welcome Ms. Barr and Dr. Song to the FAIR Health Board. Their experiences in healthcare reform, medicine, and public policy will enrich our discussions." Additionally, FAIR Health President Ray Campbell highlighted the alignment of Barr and Song’s expertise with the organization’s goals, emphasizing their potential to drive FAIR Health’s mission forward.

FAIR Health continues to pursue its mission of providing trustworthy data, with the largest repository of commercial healthcare claims data growing rapidly each year. The organization aims not only to aid in healthcare decision-making but also to empower consumers through accessible resources, including a mobile app and online tools to estimate healthcare expenses.

With the new leadership from Barr and Song, FAIR Health is poised for a transformative era that could enhance its influence on healthcare reform and policy developments, ultimately benefiting a broad spectrum of stakeholders in the healthcare system. Their combined expertise promises to bolster FAIR Health’s initiatives, reinforcing its dedication to facilitating improved healthcare quality and accessibility across the United States.
