Hoag Achieves Prestigious Magnet® with Distinction Recognition for Superior Nursing Practice

Hoag's Latest Achievement: Magnet® with Distinction

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, located in Newport Beach, California, has proudly announced that it has received its fifth Magnet® recognition, an honor that symbolizes its enduring commitment to high-quality nursing practices. Uniquely, this year, Hoag has achieved the new Magnet with Distinction, a prestigious designation from the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC). This recognition is not only a testament to meeting the rigorous standards for nursing excellence but also signifies that Hoag exceeds them.

With this latest achievement, Hoag joins a select group of just 18 institutions nationwide and holds the distinction of being the sole health facility in Southern California to be granted this elite nursing quality credential. Such recognition helps patients identify healthcare organizations that prioritize high satisfaction levels among nurses and offer safe, quality care.

Robert T. Braithwaite, Hoag's President and CEO, expressed his pride in this remarkable accomplishment, stating, "This prestigious honor reflects the dedication of our incredible nursing staff and our entire team. It highlights Hoag's commitment to delivering exceptional care to our community."

Hoag first earned Magnet recognition back in 2005, and this most recent award marks a significant milestone for the hospital as it continues its legacy within the global community of Magnet organizations. Out of nearly 6,120 healthcare organizations in the U.S., only 601 have this designation, with Hoag being one of just 39 in California.

Rick Martin, Ed.D, MSN, RN, and Hoag’s Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, explains, "Magnet recognition has set higher standards for patient care and serves continuously as an inspiration for our team. This fifth designation showcases how we uphold our commitment to excellence and prioritize the well-being of our community."

The benefits of Magnet recognition extend beyond the award itself. Research indicates that institutions with Magnet status enjoy:
  • - Higher patient satisfaction rates.
  • - Improved patient outcomes.
  • - Increased job satisfaction among nursing staff.
  • - Enhanced recruitment and retention of top-quality nurses.

To maintain this status, healthcare organizations must reapply every four years. The Magnet Model, established by the ANCC, provides a structured framework for nursing practices, research, and evaluation of outcomes. This framework guides the evaluation process, allowing ANCC to assess organizations across various components to determine their nursing excellence.

Hoag's exceptional nursing services receive immense support from philanthropic efforts, notably from the Argyros family, who have generously contributed over $32 million towards continuing education for nurses. Their commitment is reflected in the creation of the Julia Argyros Center for Nursing Excellence, which has facilitated scholarships for countless Hoag nurses. As an outcome of such initiatives, an impressive 88% of Hoag nurses have earned their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees, with many furthering their education with advanced degrees.

Hoag remains steadfast in its pursuit of nursing excellence, demonstrating an unwavering dedication to the well-being of its patients and the professional growth of its nursing staff.
