Huawei Unveils Intelligent RAIL 2.0 Strategy for Global Railway Digital Modernization

At the recent InnoTrans 2026, the world’s largest railway transport exhibition held from September 22 to 25, Huawei made a significant announcement. They revealed Intelligent RAIL 2.0, a groundbreaking initiative designed to modernize railway systems worldwide through advanced digital solutions. The event attracted industry stakeholders, including representatives from the International Union of Railways (UIC) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), who gathered to discuss the future of the railway sector.

During the event, Jean-Michel Evanghelou, director of digital systems and innovation at the UIC, emphasized the importance of the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). He stated that it would serve as a stepping stone for railway operators to establish a robust digital foundation. Evanghelou also mentioned that AI applications would continue to evolve, seamlessly integrating into central systems in the railway industry, ultimately leading to widespread standardization.

Mohamed Mezghani, the UITP's Secretary General, along with Lidia Signor, who oversees multimodal transport at UITP, highlighted the role of AI in enhancing subway operations globally. Signor pointed to a report they published in collaboration with the Chinese Association of Metros (CAMET), titled “AI-Driven Smart Rail Transport,” which outlines how AI solutions are being implemented across various operational sectors, from construction to maintenance, improving both operational efficiency and safety.

In his keynote address, Raymond Zuo, president of Huawei’s Smart Rail Business Unit, noted that as society progresses into the intelligence era, more stakeholders are keen to incorporate digital and intelligent technologies into their core business processes to address recurring challenges. He outlined several trends, including: the transition of infrastructure from GSM-R standards to FRMCS, a shift toward predictive maintenance for equipment, a movement towards an end-to-end service-oriented logistics model for freight, and the enhancement of passenger services geared towards providing smooth travel experiences. Moreover, engineering and construction practices are increasingly adopting digital technologies to boost safety and operational efficiency.

Drawing from innovative practices experienced by its leading global clients, Huawei introduced the Intelligent RAIL strategy which aims at enhancing safety, efficiency, service integration, and long-term evolution in the railway sector. This strategy leverages advanced digital and intelligent technologies to foster continual improvements. Among the highlights of this strategy is the launch of the next-generation RAIL 2.0, comprising 20 solutions tailored to different scenarios within the industry.

These solutions focus on three vital areas: construction, passenger and freight transportation, and facility/equipment maintenance, addressing longstanding challenges faced by the industry. Developed in collaboration with partners, these scenario-based solutions see Huawei concentrating on communications and digital platforms while its partners specialize in sector-specific applications to deliver modular and combinable solutions catered to the unique needs of railway clients.

As of now, Huawei boasts collaboration with over 50 major railway clients worldwide and has equipped more than 300 urban rail transport lines, encompassing over 180,000 kilometers of track. Not only is Huawei a leading provider of ICT products globally, but it also stands as a trusted partner in the ongoing digital transformation during this intelligent era.
