In a groundbreaking move to support the disabled workforce, the GitLab Foundation has announced a substantial grant of $500,000 to Making Space, a platform dedicated to addressing the employment disparities faced by disabled individuals. This funding aims to bolster the expansion of Making Space’s Ascend Fellowship and fast-track the development of responsible AI tools that enhance access to employment and promote long-term economic mobility for disabled professionals.

The initiative is designed to empower a hybrid model that combines fellowship programming with systematic changes in employer practices while facilitating the nationwide deployment of Making Space’s AI-driven tools. These tools include essential features such as skill translation, benefits continuity support, and guidance for navigating ABLE accounts. The objective is to dismantle the significant barriers that banish many disabled workers from the job market, notably higher rates of unemployment and poverty driven by previous systemic discrimination.

Historically, disabled individuals have faced a daunting 2:1 ratio of unemployment and are twice as likely to live in poverty compared to non-disabled individuals. Factors contributing to these grim statistics include inaccessible workplaces, hiring biases, and fear of losing much-needed benefits like Medicaid or housing assistance. The comprehensive model of Making Space seeks to tackle these issues simultaneously, providing an accessible learning environment and community, while preparing employers for accommodating disabled talent.

This announcement builds on the successful collaboration between GitLab Foundation and Making Space through the Ascend Fellowship, which previously showcased remarkable outcomes in economic mobility for disabled participants. The first cohort of the fellowship generated an estimated $111 million in projected lifetime earnings for 100 participants, demonstrating an impressive 1231% return on investment and training approximately 5,000 hiring managers within partner organizations.

With this new investment, Making Space plans to expand its fellowship program while testing and refining its advanced AI tools with participants before launching them for widespread use. Once fully operational, the developed curriculum and tools are anticipated to reach disabled adults nationwide, enhancing job placements, fostering wage growth, and facilitating safer career pathways without jeopardizing essential benefits.

Key insights emphasized by stakeholders emphasize that traditional platforms tend to optimize for mere job placement; however, Making Space’s approach prioritizes long-term employment sustainability, fundamentally altering the work experience of disabled individuals. In the words of Matt Zieger, Chief Programs and Partnerships Officer at GitLab Foundation, “This is about building an employer partnership model that opens up doors and ensures they remain open.”

The initiative’s significance is further highlighted by personal testimonials from those involved in the Ascend Fellowship.
