What is Cat Day?

February 22 marks Cat Day in Japan, established in 1987 by a committee of cat-loving scholars and cultural figures, along with the Pet Food Industry Association (now known as the Pet Food Association). The date was chosen because the sound of a cat’s meow can be represented as “Nyan (2), Nyan (2), Nyan (2),” making it a clever wordplay to celebrate our feline companions. The day was determined after a vote among cat enthusiasts across Japan, with a significant 30% supporting this particular date.

In the heart of a pet boom, this holiday has continued to grow in popularity—showcasing cats as beloved pets alongside dogs.
