The Importance of Accurate Bra Fitting on Size Day: A Comprehensive Survey of Women's Experiences

March 12: Size Day

On March 12, which is known as Size Day, Wacoal conducted a survey involving 2,000 women aged between 20 and 50 from across Japan. The objective was to investigate the actual practices surrounding bra fitting and measurements during purchases. This day, designated by Wacoal, serves as a reminder to women to understand their correct sizes, especially at the start of a new season.

Survey Findings

The survey revealed some surprising trends. Specifically, approximately 46.7% of participants admitted to not measuring their size before purchasing a bra, while 51.5% stated they skip fitting altogether. The statistics for professional fittings indicated that 30.8% had their size measured by a sales associate, and only 25.9% experienced a fitting. The younger demographic, particularly women in their 20s, showcased a higher engagement with professional fittings - 46.6% for measurements and 39.6% for fittings. However, as age increased, the likelihood of skipping measurements and fittings also rose markedly.

This raises significant concerns about women purchasing bras without any knowledge of their actual size or fit, potentially affecting their comfort and body image. Wacoal aims to address this gap by implementing various initiatives that help women find their proper fittings easily and accurately.

Wacoal’s Initiatives

To encourage more regular fittings, Wacoal has rolled out several initiatives. One such initiative is their SCANBE service, which allows for quick 3D self-measurement in just three seconds. Additionally, they offer a free bra assessment event featuring expert counselors who can help address specific concerns regarding bra fit and bust issues. Starting this March, Wacoal is also promoting a fitting campaign aiming to uplift women's spirits by providing a delightful fitting experience tailored to their needs.

Reasons Women Skip Fitting

Several reasons were identified as to why many women opt not to measure or fit their bras: The primary reason was that 51.7% felt that measuring was tedious, while 33.5% felt embarrassed, and 32.3% disliked being attended to by sales associates. The discomfort associated with fittings, alongside personal insecurities around body image, significantly contributes to this trend.

Conversely, those who do engage in the fitting process cite reasons including desires to purchase well-suited underwear (78.8%), to learn proper wearing techniques (26.6%), and to resolve specific concerns with assistance from store staff. This shows a definitive correlation between the willingness to engage in fittings and achieving more favorable outcomes in bra selection.

The Expert Perspective

To delve deeper, we consulted Miwako Yuasa, a lingerie wellness expert. She noted that the reluctance to get fitted often stems from a lack of awareness about the importance of finding the right fit. People are often unaware that body types vary greatly among individuals, leading to significant differences in how various bras fit. As such, the need for regular fittings is paramount as body shapes and sizes change over time.

Yuasa emphasizes treating fitting sessions not merely as a shopping task but as times for self-care. She suggests wearing comfortable clothing that can be easily taken on and off and reframing the fitting experience as a valuable investment in one’s future self.

Closing Thoughts

Wacoal’s commitment to instilling awareness of body sizes through campaigns like Size Day is essential in bridging the gap in proper fitting practices among women. By using engaging and friendly service methods combined with self-service technology, they are not just selling bras—they’re also nurturing confidence among their consumers. As more women become aware of their correct size through initiatives like this, they may find greater comfort and style in their lingerie choices. For those hesitant about fittings, remember that knowing your size and trying on the right bras can transform how you feel about yourself.
