Canon Launches AI-Based Agricultural Support Service in Japan's Ehime Prefecture

Canon's Groundbreaking AI Farming Support Service

In a significant step towards modernizing the agricultural industry, Canon Marketing Japan and its group company, Canon IT Solutions, are set to launch an AI-based farming support service in Ehime Prefecture starting June 2026. This project will leverage visual and environmental data like weather and soil conditions to support farmers in making informed decisions about their daily work and to facilitate the transfer of specialized knowledge. This initiative is part of a broader digital implementation acceleration project dubbed “Triangle Ehime 2.0,” which was continued from the previous year.

Project Background

The agricultural sector is currently grappling with issues such as labor shortages and an aging farmer demographic, which have led to an over-reliance on individual experience, often making farming operations dependent on subjective decision-making. Recognizing this, last year's trials successfully set up a system allowing farmers to remotely monitor their crops using visual and environmental data. However, it became clear that to make this data accessible to a wider range of farmers and workers, additional support tools were needed to aid in interpreting this information.

Particularly concerning was the discrepancy in how different skill levels affected the utilization of data for critical farming decisions such as crop management and timing. To address this challenge, this year's implementation will introduce AI capabilities, providing farmers with straightforward insights derived from data, thus enhancing their decision-making processes.

Details of the 2026 Implementation Trials

This year, Canon IT Solutions will introduce an AI feature within its image AI collaboration platform, “Bind Vision.” This new functionality enables farmers to easily access details relevant to their decision-making, utilizing not only captured images and environmental data but also records of cultivation practices (such as irrigation and pest control) and growing manuals. With this, farmers can better understand their crops' health and environmental changes along with past agricultural management history, leading to more effective decision-making.

The project will focus on various agricultural environments, including previously tested crops like roses and taros in open fields and tomatoes in hydroponic systems, as well as new trials involving house-grown asparagus.

Expectations and Future Implications

By harnessing AI for decision support, the project aims to create a management model where operational efficiency and yield increases can be achieved without the need for constant advice from experienced practitioners. Concurrently, partnerships with local farmers and experts will continue through study sessions to enhance the service's precision based on real-world feedback.

Ehime Prefecture hopes that through this project, a lasting service will develop locally while expanding the base of farmers engaging with data-driven agriculture. Insights gained from this initiative will be utilized to extend similar solutions, thereby enabling a broader array of farmers to tap into the benefits of data utilization in their practices.

In summary, this initiative represents a pivotal shift in the agricultural landscape, combining advanced technology and traditional farming practices aimed at cultivating a more efficient and productive agricultural future in Japan.
