Introducing the Life-Saving Rescue Bike at Japan Bike Show 2025

Unveiling the Rescue Bike: A New Hope for Emergency Response

In a major advancement for disaster response, Sakai Cycle has developed the Rescue Bike, a cutting-edge electric assist bicycle designed to revolutionize emergency transportation and logistics. Officially unveiled at the Japan Bike Show 2025, the bike is a collaboration supported by the Sakai Fire Bureau, reflecting a profound commitment to community safety and innovation.

Features and Specifications

The Rescue Bike is equipped with a Shimano electric unit, boasting an internal five-speed transmission and a robust design that can transport essential supplies and up to two adults in the front seat. Here’s a closer look at its specifications:
  • - Three Wheel Design for Stability: The bike’s unique three-wheeled structure ensures stability despite heavy loads, making it ideal for various terrains.
  • - Compact Turning Radius: With a minimum turning radius of just 1.35 meters, maneuvering through tight spaces becomes a breeze, particularly compared to traditional vehicles.
  • - Versatile Load Capacity: It can carry two adults comfortably, and its folding seat allows for the transportation of heavier items, ensuring that all types of materials can be efficiently managed during emergencies.
  • - Climbing Capability: Designed to tackle inclines of up to 7 degrees effortlessly, the Rescue Bike can navigate various terrains, which is essential during disaster relief efforts.
  • - Ease of Transport: Weighing in at roughly 70kg, the bike can easily be lifted by two individuals, allowing it to be transported in light commercial vehicles, thereby increasing its accessibility in emergency situations.

Development Journey

Initiated by a passionate desire to improve disaster response efficiency, the development of the Rescue Bike was driven by the tragic events of the July 2018 Western Japan flooding. During this crisis, many vital resources could not reach affected areas due to accessibility issues, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions like the Rescue Bike.

“Had we been able to transport resources more efficiently, we could have deployed more personnel to the critical areas,” reflects Masaru Ogawa, Deputy Director of Sakai Cycle’s Solutions Division. The Rescue Bike aims to streamline logistics during emergencies, ensuring that the focus remains on saving lives and providing necessary aid.

A Multi-Faceted Tool for Communities

The versatility of the Rescue Bike stretches beyond disaster response. Its design includes features that allow individuals who cannot ride conventional bicycles to experience the thrill of cycling. The bike offers a unique opportunity to engage with local communities, encouraging discussions around disaster preparedness and safety.

During its debut at the Japan Bike Show 2025, the bike will be on display at Sakai Cycle's booth, inviting local authorities and organizations focused on safety, welfare, and transportation to explore its capabilities. The event is scheduled for October 15th and 16th, 2025, at the Ariake Gym-EX.

The Vision Going Forward

The launch of the Rescue Bike represents a significant stride toward integrating cycling into disaster preparedness initiatives across Japan. In a nation frequently impacted by natural disasters, maximizing the use of bicycles for logistics and transport can significantly improve response efforts. As this innovative bike takes center stage at the show, it symbolizes hope and progress in the ongoing fight against the challenges posed by natural disasters.Potential pricing for the Rescue Bike is currently under review, with expectations set around ¥1 million (approximately USD 9,000), excluding any optional components. Sales are anticipated to commence in 2026, ushering in a new era for emergency transportation solutions. The Rescue Bike stands to not only assist in times of crisis but also enrich community welfare initiatives during everyday circumstances.
