Why Cooperative Assembly?
This year marks the 20th annual assembly with the core theme being "Cooperation." Cooperation means working together toward goals that cannot be achieved individually, sharing ideas with friends, supporting local communities, and making positive societal changes. What's more, 2025 has been proclaimed as the International Year of Cooperatives by the United Nations.
The origins of cooperatives can be traced back to the industrial revolution in 19th century England, where workers, housewives, and students came together to create a better society through cooperation. Today, we face challenges such as inequality, climate crises, and gender disparities. The cooperative movement has the power to connect individuals and foster hope.
During this assembly, we will emphasize themes of "encounters" to explore how living, learning, work, and culture can contribute to community building. Participants will engage in discussions about practical experiences that generate cooperative possibilities across generations and organizations. We encourage you to join us in envisioning the society of the future.
About the Workers Cooperative Federation
The Workers Cooperative Federation, established in September 1979, plays a vital role in supporting and promoting cooperative labor practices in Japan. According to the Workers Cooperative Act, enacted in October 2022, worker cooperatives operate with a focus on self-funding, collective management, and fulfilling societal needs through collaboration. The law ensures that members can participate in decision-making and contribute directly to the operations.
In light of this new legal framework, the Workers Cooperative Federation is actively working with its member organizations to develop sustainable work and living conditions through cooperative labor. By utilizing this law, we strive to empower individuals to create meaningful employment opportunities in their communities.
