IDnow's Survey Highlights Consumer Hesitancy Towards EUDI Wallet and Future of Digital Identity

IDnow’s EUDI Wallet Consumer Survey: Insights and Consumer Sentiments

IDnow, a prominent name in Europe’s digital identity and fraud prevention arena, recently released the findings from its EUDI Wallet Consumer Survey, shedding light on consumer perspectives just ahead of the wallet's December rollout. The survey, which engaged 2,000 adults from both France and Germany, unveils a landscape where awareness is still low, friction hinders financial services, and there lies an opportunity for brands that can build consumer trust.

Key Findings from the Survey

A significant third of respondents from the survey indicated that cumbersome identity verification processes often lead to transaction abandonment. Shockingly, 46% of the participants reported that they frequently walk away from a transaction if verifying their identity becomes too complex or time-consuming, highlighting a critical area that EUDI Wallet must address to ensure a seamless user experience.

Security First: Consumer Preferences

From the results, it's clear that security and transparency rank higher than quickness in the minds of consumers. Approximately 40% of those surveyed emphasized that improved fraud protection is their top priority when considering the adoption of the EUDI Wallet. Furthermore, 31% expressed the importance of having enhanced control over the data they share. The concept of transparency in data usage also garnered attention, with 29% of respondents keen on knowing how their information is utilized.

Interestingly, only 28% prioritized faster processes, indicating a shift in consumer focus towards secure and manageable identity verification rather than sheer speed. Additionally, the survey revealed that 47% of consumers would agree to additional identity checks if they could ensure better security, even if it seems to prolong the verification duration. This highlights a strong appetite for security enhancements.

The Role of Selective Disclosure

A striking 63% of respondents showed interest in using the EUDI Wallet if it allowed them to verify certain details, like their age, without needing to share their entire data set. The ability to utilize selective disclosure, where consumers can provide only the necessary information, emerges as a potential game-changer for user adoption. This feature stands out as a vital selling point for the EUDI Wallet amidst growing concerns over data protection and identity theft.

Adoption Outlook

Despite the European Union's mandate that all member states provide access to the EUDI Wallet by December 2026, there's a general consensus in the survey that widespread adoption may take time. When participants were asked their preferred methods for identity verification when opening a bank account, the responses were varied: 24% favored in-person verification, 14% showed preference for a digital identity wallet, while 14% opted for new technologies like NFC scanning. This suggests that while digital wallets are on the rise, traditional methods of verification will not disappear overnight.

Adapting to these consumer preferences will be critical for financial institutions. The IDnow Trust Platform was launched with the intention of guiding each customer towards their preferred onboarding process while not interrupting the overall experience.

Closing the Gap

Philippe Morel, CEO of IDnow, summarized the findings by stating that European consumers acknowledge the challenges the EUDI Wallet aims to resolve, but are yet to be fully convinced of its efficacy as a solution. With rising identity fraud and ineffective online verification processes, consumers exhibit hesitancy towards sharing more personal data than necessary. According to Morel, it’s crucial for the EUDI Wallet to bridge this trust gap effectively.

Conclusion

The EUDI Wallet Consumer Survey provides substantial insights for understanding current consumer practices concerning digital identity, security expectations, and the barriers that hinder adoption. As IDnow continues to advocate for robust digital identity solutions, it remains imperative to address these consumer insights to foster trust and ease in digital transactions moving forward.
