The Introduction of JOT: Revolutionizing Japanese Language Testing Nationwide

JOT: A New Era in Japanese Language Assessment

The Japanese government recognizes the growing necessity for foreign talent to demonstrate their Japanese language proficiencies ahead of the implementation of the '育成就労制度' (Development and Employment System) scheduled for April 2027. In response, the General Incorporated Association for the Promotion of Global Inclusive Society (GISPA) announced that the Japanese Online Test (JOT) will be available for candidates at over 100 Pearson VUE certified testing centers across Japan starting from July. This new initiative aims to enhance convenience and accessibility for individuals seeking to study or work in Japan, individuals applying to Japanese language schools, holders of the "Technical, Humanistic Knowledge, and International Services" visa, and foreign residents currently residing under the "Specified Skills" system.

Expanding Accessibility Nationwide

Traditionally, JOT has been offered primarily through affiliated educational institutions both domestically and internationally. However, with the partnership with Pearson Professional Assessment, the test will now be accessible at over 100 certified Pearson VUE testing centers throughout Japan. Candidates will be able to choose a nearby venue that fits their schedule, greatly improving convenience and access to the testing process.

It's worth noting that both JOT certified venues and Pearson VUE testing centers will be available for testing, making it easier for thousands of test takers.

Features of JOT to Accelerate Educational and Employment Opportunities

The JOT is uniquely tailored for foreign talent, being the only online Japanese language test recognized by the Ministry of Justice. It employs a fully computer-based test (CBT) format, addressing three key shortcomings of traditional testing methods: opportunity, speed, and fairness. This assessment tool serves a wide demographic of foreign talent, from Japanese language learners aiming for university admissions or job placement to foreign workers leveraging the Specified Skills and Development Employment Systems.

Feature 1: On-demand Testing with Flexible Scheduling

Unlike traditional tests which are held biannually and require candidates to wait over six months for their next attempt, JOT will provide the flexibility of on-demand testing. With Pearson VUE's strengths added to traditional JOT methodologies, candidates can conveniently schedule their tests according to their academic or job timelines, removing the fear of missing career opportunities.

Feature 2: Fast Results Available

Candidates can expect to receive their results approximately one week after taking the test, compared to the two-month wait common with conventional tests. JOT allows candidates to check their results and scores on their registered "My Page" account, thus enabling immediate action towards their next steps. Furthermore, the integration of QR code verification for score results prevents forgery and allows for swift processing of admissions and job applications.

Feature 3: AI-driven Security Measures

Proving Japanese language proficiency is essential for visa applications and employment processes; hence, the fairness of the assessment is non-negotiable. JOT mandates AI-assisted identity verification for all test-takers, establishing a trustworthy and safe testing environment for candidates, employers, and governing bodies. Also, since JOT is officially recognized by the Ministry of Justice (A1/A2 level and above), it can be used as valid proof for study and work visas.

Why is JOT Necessary Now?

GISPA is committed to eliminating educational disparities and supporting learning by providing an all-inclusive educational package. This combines a self-study app, "jElearning," online classes by professional instructors, and the ability to authenticate learning outcomes through JOT.

For participants under the Specified skills and Development Employment System, engaging in vital sectors across Japan, the opportunity to study and certify their skills close to their residences is a substantial bridge for long-term integration into Japanese society.

About GISPA

The Global Inclusive Society Promotion Association (GISPA) aims to foster an environment where foreign talent can overcome language barriers and thrive within Japanese society. Through its comprehensive educational package, which includes the Japanese e-learning platform "jElearning," online instruction by expert educators, and the JOT for proficiency certification, GISPA provides a one-stop solution for language education, job support, and settlement assistance.

Comments from GISPA Leadership

Koji Nakano, the Executive Director of GISPA, stated, "Creating an environment where individuals can validate their skills at any time is a significant step towards bridging the gap between foreign talent and their aspirations. By promoting JOT widely, we aim to expand employment opportunities, encourage deeper community integration, and ultimately realize a thriving inclusive society where individuals support one another regardless of nationality."
