Launch of Five & Rising Movement Promises Economic Empowerment in Social Sector
The Launch of a Revolutionary Movement: Five & Rising
On September 16, 2025, a new and bold initiative known as Five & Rising officially took flight, designed to unlock the full economic potential of the social sector. This movement is spearheaded by Social Current, a strategic partner to a vast network of human and social service organizations, and highlights the selection of ChangeMakers Hawaiʻi, a nonprofit from Hilo, as one of the first pilot communities.
Economic Significance
The name of the movement, Five & Rising, reflects the sector's substantial contribution of 5.2% to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a clear indication of its economic force and a reminder that we are only at the outset of realizing its possibilities. This initiative comes at a critical time when the social sector, which powers around 12.5 million jobs and contributes approximately $1.4 trillion annually to the U.S. economy, faces numerous outdated structures and funding models that hinder its full potential.
Challenging the Status Quo
Dr. Jody Levison-Johnson, President and CEO of Social Current, emphasizes that the initiation of Five & Rising signifies a pivotal change in the social sector.
