Exciting New Urban Redevelopment in Funabori
A significant announcement has been made regarding the
Funabori Fourth District Urban Redevelopment Project in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo. On July 16, 2025, the project received approval from the Tokyo Governor for the establishment of a Redevelopment Association, and it was officially formed on July 27, 2025. The project is a collaborative effort between
Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate Co., Ltd. and
Tokyo Tatemono Co., Ltd., both of which are committed to working closely with the stakeholders throughout its development.
Project Overview
The redevelopment area covers approximately
2.6 hectares and is strategically located near
Funabori Station, offering residents improved accessibility and urban amenities. The project consists of two main sites: the northern site will host a new
Edogawa Ward Office building currently being relocated, while the southern site is designed for residential buildings, signifying a mixed-use approach. This initiative aims to enhance urban functions and stimulate daily activity within the area, ultimately leading to a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly environment.
Key Features of the Project
1. Integrated Land Use for a Vibrant Community
The project promotes a
multigenerational and multicultural society through united land use. By designing the area that connects the private sector with the public sector, it facilitates a foundation for community coexistence. A community square will also be developed adjacent to the ward office and along
Funabori Green Road, fostering local engagement and activity.
2. Disaster Preparedness with Resilient Structures
To ensure resilience against disasters, the residential components of the private buildings will be constructed above predicted flood levels. Essential facilities, such as shelters and emergency storage, are designated on the second floor and above, enhancing safety during adverse weather events. Furthermore, the project integrates with the existing
Tower Hall Funabori to create a cohesive disaster response hub.
3. Enhanced Pedestrian Spaces
By reconfiguring the area and widening road spaces, the project will offer
safe and comfortable pedestrian pathways. This includes upgrading the
Funabori Green Road and constructing pedestrian decks linked directly to the station's square, effectively creating accessible routes that remain usable even during flooding.
4. Green Network Integration with Funabori Street
Efforts are also being made to develop a green network closely connected to
Funabori Street. This includes a dedicated pedestrian deck and newly landscaped areas that prioritize the surrounding residential environments, emphasizing sustainability and greenery, culminating in a
vertical garden at the base of the buildings.
