EpiVax Enhances Health Equity Through Key Partnerships and Groundbreaking Research

EpiVax, an esteemed biotechnology firm renowned for its cutting-edge immunoinformatics tools, is stepping up its commitment to health equity by announcing ongoing support for two impactful nonprofit organizations — Clínica Esperanza and GAIA Vaccine Foundation. Through targeted donations, employee volunteering, and collaborative office initiatives, EpiVax aims to foster better health outcomes in communities that typically face disparities.

Addressing Local Healthcare Needs through Clínica Esperanza

Situated just a couple of blocks from the EpiVax headquarters in Providence, Rhode Island, Clínica Esperanza has been a beacon of hope for the uninsured residents of the state, providing free, linguistically appropriate healthcare since its inception in 2010. To date, the clinic has served over 30,000 patients, with 80% of them being Spanish speakers, thus delivering vital health services through its multilingual team of healthcare professionals and volunteers.

The clinic has recently been in the spotlight for its innovative community health project titled Bridging the Gap (BTG). Developed by dedicated volunteers, the project seeks to diminish health disparities among Spanish-speaking immigrants without health insurance. A significant aspect of this initiative includes the report titled Continuity of Care and Lifestyle Intervention Programs for Spanish-Speaking Immigrants Without Health Insurance at a Free Clinic in Rhode Island, which was published in the CDC’s Preventing Chronic Disease journal. The report is currently under consideration for a CDC student research award, confirming the project’s potential impact.

The results of the project indicated significant positive changes in health markers related to diabetes and heart disease, showcasing the effectiveness of continuity of care and lifestyle intervention programs in underserved populations.

GAIA Vaccine Foundation: Enhancing Global Health Through Education

On a global scale, the GAIA Vaccine Foundation is diligently working to alleviate the burden of infectious diseases that disproportionately impact underserved populations in West Africa. By improving access to vaccines and educational resources, GAIA collaborates with local physicians to implement innovative outreach programs in regions like Mali, thereby enhancing the health and wellbeing of families, particularly women and children.

Recently, GAIA published a pivotal study titled Our Daughters—Ourselves, which evaluated the impact of paired cervical cancer screenings for mothers alongside HPV vaccinations for their daughters. This groundbreaking initiative has resulted in a remarkable 10.7% increase in HPV vaccination rates among out-of-school girls in Bamako, Mali. By linking maternal health screenings to preventive measures for their children, GAIA’s approach not only raises awareness but also sets the stage for expanding such programs nationwide as part of a broader HPV vaccination campaign.

Unwavering Commitment to Shared Missions

Annie De Groot, MD, co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of EpiVax, expressed her pride in the company's contributions to Clínica Esperanza and GAIA. "Our volunteerism and support for these organizations exemplify EpiVax’s unwavering commitment to enhancing human health, both locally and globally," Dr. De Groot stated.
