Global Leaders Unite to Call for Rached Ghannouchi's Release from Prison
In a powerful show of international solidarity, more than 400 distinguished former heads of state, scholars, and human rights leaders have come together to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Rached Ghannouchi, a prominent Tunisian political figure. This collective appeal, orchestrated by the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID), highlights the urgent need for justice and human rights in Tunisia amid growing international concern over the country's political climate.
Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi, leader of the Ennahdha movement and former speaker of Tunisia’s parliament, was sentenced to an astonishing life imprisonment plus an additional 30 years in June 2026. The gravity of this sentence has shocked many; at 85 years old, many fear he may not survive the harsh conditions of imprisonment much longer. His trial, held behind closed doors, was criticized for lacking transparency and fairness, illuminating the absence of judicial independence in Tunisia as courts are reported to operate under government influence.
The coalition of signatories includes notable figures such as Moncef Marzouki, the former president of Tunisia, and Abdullah Gül, the former president of Turkey. Their diverse political backgrounds highlight a significant consensus among politicians and scholars across more than 30 countries. Even scholars and political theorists from esteemed universities—such as Larry Diamond and Francis Fukuyama—have lent their voices to this urgent cause, arguing that political disagreements should be addressed through dialogue, not imprisonment.
Radwan A. Masmoudi, president of CSID, emphasized the collective argument of the signatories, stating, "This is a global chorus… saying with one voice that an 85-year-old man should not die in prison for his political beliefs." The signatories make it clear that their support for Ghannouchi's release does not imply unanimous agreement with his ideology, underscoring a fundamental belief in democratic principles. They advocate for a political environment in Tunisia where ideas are debated and contested peacefully rather than resorting to suppression and incarceration.
Additionally, the appeal demands the release of all political prisoners in Tunisia and the restoration of judicial independence. This call arises from a desire to see Tunisia return to a path of democracy and respect for human rights.
In light of these developments, CSID urges both the Tunisian government and international bodies to act promptly. The deterioration of Ghannouchi’s health has been alarming, with reports stating he was hospitalized in April 2026 due to serious health issues. Such circumstances amplify the urgency surrounding his case.
The campaign to free Rached Ghannouchi is non-partisan, and CSID is openly inviting more individuals—scholars, faith leaders, and civil society representatives—to further support the cause by signing the petition available at freerachedghannouchi.us/petition.
As the world becomes increasingly aware of the situation in Tunisia, many hope that this united front of international leaders will exert enough pressure on authorities for a change. The message is clear: it is not simply about one man but about the principles of justice, democracy, and human rights that should be upheld for all. The eyes of the world are watching, and the fight for Ghannouchi’s freedom is emblematic of a larger struggle for political rights and freedoms in Tunisia and beyond.
