Cigna Group Foundation's Grant Program: Empowering Veterans' Mental Health and Housing Stability
In a significant step towards supporting U.S. veterans, the Cigna Group Foundation has unveiled its inaugural grant recipients as part of a new program designed to bolster veterans' mental health, particularly focusing on housing stability. Announced on January 8, 2025, the initiative earmarks a substantial $9 million over three years aimed at improving the well-being of veterans across the nation.
The program arises from an understanding of the multifaceted challenges faced by veterans after returning from military service. Many veterans grapple with persistent health conditions, including traumatic brain injuries, depression, and substance abuse disorders, which can severely hinder their access to stable housing. Melissa Skottegaard, chairperson of the Cigna Group Foundation board, states, "By addressing shelter, we can put veterans on a better path for their mental health." This sentiment captures the foundation’s commitment to making a substantial impact in the lives of those who’ve served.
A total of 22 nonprofit organizations have received grants, each dedicated to supporting veterans, particularly those at an elevated risk of homelessness. These organizations employ evidence-based programs designed to assist local veterans—ensuring that those who have served, including underrepresented groups such as female veterans and veterans of color, find stability in their living conditions. Notably, many of these organizations will adopt the Housing First model. This approach has proven effective in not only reducing the time it takes for veterans to secure housing but also in significantly improving their overall health and well-being.
The selected grantees span a diverse range of states and initiatives including:
- - U.S.Vets – Arizona (Arizona)
- - Community Renewal Team, Inc. (Connecticut)
- - Grand Avenue Economic Community Development Corp. (Florida)
- - City of Refuge, Inc. (Georgia)
- - Veterans Community Project (Missouri)
- - Veterans Leadership Program (Pennsylvania),
among others. Each organization is committed to improving the response to veterans' housing needs by mobilizing resources quickly, connecting them to government assistance programs, and facilitating pathways to permanent housing.
The Cigna Group Foundation has strategically chosen regions where it has a significant customer base alongside high social determinant health risks. States like Arizona, Florida, Texas, and others will be the primary focus areas, ensuring that resources are directed to regions with the most urgent needs.
To further enhance its impact, the foundation has also provided Habitat for Humanity International with a $250,000 grant aimed at increasing homeownership opportunities for veterans. This initiative supports the HUD-VASH program, which connects veterans with necessary case management and housing assistance.
Moreover, the Cigna Group consistently encourages employee involvement in supporting veterans. Recently, employees contributed over 400 volunteer hours to a series of housing projects benefiting veterans across eight states, performing various tasks from home construction to landscaping.
As the Cigna Group continues to forge connections with community organizations, it remains dedicated to finding innovative solutions that address in-depth challenges faced by veterans. Through its thoughtful initiatives, The Cigna Group Foundation strives not only to support housing stability but also fundamentally enhances the mental health and quality of life for those who have served the nation diligently.
