The Current Status and Future Prospects of Perovskite Solar Cell Technology in Japan's 7th Energy Basic Plan

Seminar Overview: Perovskite Solar Cells

On August 29, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host an insightful seminar featuring Professor Hiroshi Segawa from the University of Tokyo. This seminar will focus on the current developments and future potential of perovskite solar cells, particularly within the framework of Japan's 7th Energy Basic Plan.

What are Perovskite Solar Cells?

Perovskite solar cells, often referred to simply as perovskite cells, are a new breed of photovoltaic technology that offers several advantages. These cells can be manufactured using domestically available materials, making them a viable option for various installations across Japan. Their lightweight design further contributes to their appeal as a next-generation solar energy solution.

Why Perovskite Solar Cells are Promising

The efficiency of perovskite solar cells has reached impressive levels, with laboratory experiments documenting energy conversion efficiencies approaching 27%. Moreover, practical applications using larger area modules are currently in progress. The Japanese government is supporting research and development in this area through recent initiatives like the Green Innovation Fund. According to the recently adopted 7th Energy Basic Plan, there are ambitions to introduce 20 gigawatts of perovskite solar cells by 2040.

Seminar Agenda

1. Understanding Perovskite Solar Cells: What are they and how do they work?
2. The Promising Future: Why the industry is excited about perovskite solar technology.
3. Types and Characteristics: Different types of perovskite solar cells and their unique features.
4. Research and Development Trends: Latest developments in perovskite solar cell technology.
5. Future of Energy Utilization: How perovskite solar cells can reshape energy consumption.
6. Discussion: Engaging with industry peers about concerns and insights.
7. Networking Session: An opportunity for participants to exchange business cards and ideas, fostering professional connections that can lead to future collaborations.

Participants can choose how they wish to attend the seminar: in-person, via live broadcast, or through an archived session that can be viewed multiple times within two weeks after the event.

Seminar Fees

  • - Individual admission: 37,550 JPY (tax included)
  • - Corporate rates: 32,550 JPY per person for groups from the same company.
  • - Special rates for local government attendees: Up to two individuals can register for 11,000 JPY each, provided they attend on the same format (either in-person or via live broadcast).
