MOL and GAIL Sign Long-Term Charter Agreement for LNG Vessel at India Energy Week 2026

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has recently solidified its partnership with GAIL (India) Limited by entering into a long-term charter agreement for the LNG vessel 'GAIL BHUWAN'. This significant development took place on January 27, during the 'India Energy Week 2026' event held in Goa. The agreement was signed between a joint venture company that owns the vessel and GAIL, which is a leading public sector gas company under India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The partnership between MOL and GAIL has been a robust one, showing continuous evolution and strengthening over time. One of the primary reasons behind this long-term charter agreement is MOL’s renowned reputation for safety, quality, and reliability in maritime transport services. This agreement marks a milestone not only in enhancing the maritime and energy supply networks in India but also plays a critical role in achieving the medium- to long-term decarbonization goals that both companies have set.

MOL has outlined regional strategies as a core pillar of its group management plan, 'BLUE ACTION 2035'. With Asia recognized as a region with high economic growth potential, the company is actively engaged in business development, particularly in India, where economic advancement has been rapid. The collaboration on energy projects, including this significant agreement, aims to expand the transportation and logistics infrastructure to meet the growing demand for energy resources, such as gas, which is increasingly being recognized as essential for stable supply.

GAIL, India’s leading natural gas company, has ventured into a comprehensive range of activities spanning the entirety of the natural gas value chain. It is involved in natural gas trading, transportation, LPG production and transport, LNG shipping, regasification, petrochemicals, city gas distribution, and exploration and production (E&P). Maintaining an extensive natural gas pipeline network exceeding 18,001 kilometers across the country, GAIL is committed to ensuring energy security for India.

Within the LNG sector, GAIL has established a large and diverse portfolio to ensure long-term supply stability and positions itself as a key player in the global LNG market. As part of its integrated logistics strategy, GAIL has constructed the largest LNG fleet in India, enhancing maritime capability and ensuring a seamless supply to meet the rising domestic LNG demand.

MOL’s strategy involves a transition toward a business portfolio that emphasizes stable revenue-generating activities, ensuring profitability even during maritime downturns. The expansion of its world-leading LNG fleet and long-term charter contracts aligns with this approach. By leveraging its accumulated expertise and experience, MOL aspires to evolve into a global social infrastructure enterprise, supporting daily life through robust maritime operations while delivering new value to all stakeholders.

The signing ceremony at 'India Energy Week 2026' signifies a commitment not only to growth in the energy sector but also to a collaborative approach towards advancing India's energy goals. Both MOL and GAIL are focused on contributing to the development and stability of energy supply chains necessary for an economy that is transitioning towards a more sustainable future. As the demand for energy continues to increase, partnerships like these will play an essential role in shaping the landscape of energy logistics in India and beyond.
