Editorial Freelancers Association Unveils 2026 Rate Chart for Professionals

EFA Releases the 2026 Editorial Rate Chart

On March 24, 2026, the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) announced the launch of the 2026 EFA Rate Chart, an essential tool for freelancers and clients operating in the publishing sector. As the freelance landscape grows, understanding fair pricing becomes increasingly vital for both new and experienced professionals.

Vina Orden, the director of communications and marketing for EFA, emphasized, "Many individuals entering freelance work, whether part-time or full-time, often struggle to determine appropriate pricing for their services. Additionally, independent authors, particularly those embarking on their first projects, frequently lack a clear understanding of the necessary services and their associated costs. The EFA Rate Chart and our editing service glossary offer insight for both parties."

This year's edition of the Rate Chart significantly includes data related to KidLit (children's literature) and Young Adult (YA) demographics, reflecting the current trends in publishing. Alongside the Rate Chart, EFA has revamped its rate estimator tool for those seeking freelance services and a rate converter tool designed for freelancers to use when discussing pricing.

The chart draws its data from a comprehensive survey conducted from November 2025 to January 2026. For the first time, EFA extended participation beyond its membership base, receiving responses from over 1,100 individuals—representing the highest number of respondents since the survey commenced in 1991. This expansion underscores the pressing need for transparent pricing guidelines within the industry.

While the EFA encourages users to reference the rates in the chart, it stresses that the figures serve merely as guidance. The actual fees charged by individual members may vary significantly, influenced by factors like experience, project scope, genre, and specialty. "Our aim is to empower both our members and their potential clients with practical resources, alongside educational initiatives like classes for editors and writers, a comprehensive job listing, and a directory for members to connect directly with clients," said Cyndi Sandusky, EFA Membership subcommittee chair.

Founded in 1970, the Editorial Freelancers Association is a global professional network comprised of nearly 3,300 members, which includes editors, writers, and various publishing professionals. Notable figures in the publishing community, including Jane Friedman and Louise Harnby, have commended EFA's contributions. Renowned resources such as the American Medical Writers Association and the Chicago Manual of Style blog have also recognized its value.

The mission of the EFA is focused on fostering excellence within its vibrant community of freelance editorial professionals through offerings that enhance business growth, learning opportunities, and networking prospects. This commitment to professional development equips editors and writers alike to build fruitful collaborations.

As Publishers Weekly aptly put it, "The Editorial Freelancers Association might just be the book publishing industry’s most powerful secret weapon.” With this new Rate Chart in play, both freelancers and those seeking their services have a more structured approach to pricing and collaboration.

As the industry evolves, the EFA stands as a cornerstone supporting both freelancers and clients in navigating the complexities of editorial service costs, enabling all parties to engage in fruitful partnerships within the literary world.
