Huawei Surpasses Targets by Connecting 170 Million People Worldwide through ITU P2C Initiative

In a groundbreaking achievement, Huawei Technologies has reported that they have connected a remarkable 170 million individuals across more than 80 countries, fulfilling and surpassing their commitment to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Partner2Connect (P2C) Digital Coalition. This milestone was unveiled by Yang Chaobin, CEO of Huawei's ICT Business Group, during the TECH Cares Forum held recently in Barcelona, Spain. The initiative is a leap beyond their initial pledge made in 2022 to connect 120 million people in remote areas by 2025.

At the forum, attended by around 80 guests comprising government officials, industry leaders, and representatives from various organizations, discussions focused on the critical need for enhancing digital inclusion amid rapidly evolving artificial intelligence technologies. Yang emphasized that, despite significant advancements in AI, the digital divide remains a pressing issue, threatening to widen further without concerted effort. "High-speed digital networks are essential foundations for an inclusive and sustainable AI era," he stressed, highlighting that the completion of the ITU P2C pledge underscores Huawei's commitment to innovation and improving access to crucial services such as healthcare and education in underprivileged areas.

Cosmas Zavazava, the Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau, commended Huawei for its initiatives to bridge the digital gap. He noted that connecting rural and underserved communities requires innovative approaches and a commitment to inclusivity and local capacity building. Zavazava expressed pride in the collaboration between the ITU and Huawei, representing a significant step towards ensuring meaningful connectivity worldwide.

Jeff Wang, President of Huawei Public Affairs and Communications, pointed out that digital inclusion relies on two critical components: inclusive connectivity and the empowerment of digital skills. To tackle the skills gap, Huawei collaborates with various entities to provide digital training and educational resources, focusing on diverse groups such as youth, women, and the elderly. Huawei’s Skills on Wheels program has already reached over 130,000 individuals in 21 countries since its inception in 2019, extending new opportunities to marginalized communities.

Marina Madale, an Executive at MTN Group, emphasized that connectivity should be viewed as foundational infrastructure driving growth in Africa. In alignment with Jeff Wang's remarks, she highlighted MTN's commitment to enhancing rural connectivity and affordability of devices while fostering digital competencies.

Since 2017, Huawei has progressively enhanced its Rural Series solutions to facilitate more efficient deployment and improved cost-effectiveness. The recent roll-out of the Huawei RuralCow solution, which targets villages with populations around 1,500, marks another significant achievement in their effort to connect remote communities. These innovations not only promote local economic growth but also enable broader access to essential digital public services.

During the forum, attendees discussed their collaborative successes with Huawei and expressed enthusiasm for deepening partnerships in future initiatives. All parties recognized that fostering digital inclusivity in the era of AI necessitates joint action among governments, telecommunications providers, international organizations, and private sector enterprises. Moving forward, Huawei remains dedicated to advancing innovations in rural connectivity, promoting open collaborations, and accelerating empowerment through digital skills training. Through consistent efforts, the company aims to contribute significantly to building a more equitable and sustainable digital landscape globally.
