PLAYWORKS Unveils Cocotape Evacuation Kit at Sight World 2025

PLAYWORKS Inc., a consulting firm specializing in inclusive design, plans to participate in the comprehensive event, "Sight World 2025," which will be held from October 16 to 18, 2025, at the Sumida Industrial Hall in Kinshicho, Tokyo. The event is specifically focused on supporting visually impaired individuals.

On the final day of the event, October 18th, PLAYWORKS will introduce their new "Cocotape Evacuation Kit." This kit aims to support visually impaired individuals during emergencies, facilitating their mobility and aiding evacuation procedures. Alongside the kit presentation, attendees can expect a valuable experience with a simulated voting station, where they can practice voting techniques tailored for the visually impaired.

What is Cocotape?

The Cocotape is a specially designed guide tape, 48mm in width, made from polyvinyl chloride, intended for indoor use. Its portability allows visually impaired individuals to carry it in their bags and apply it wherever necessary to navigate both familiar and unfamiliar environments. As a useful tool for promoting independent mobility, the Cocotape plays a crucial role in enhancing the everyday lives of its users.

Available in a 3m roll for 4,950 yen (tax included) and 25cm bars, priced at 1,200 yen (tax included), Cocotape is gaining recognition among visually impaired communities as a reliable aid in various scenarios.

The Challenges Faced by Visually Impaired Individuals in Shelters

Surveys conducted with visually impaired participants highlight several significant challenges they encounter in evacuation shelters. Key issues identified include:
1. Difficulty with Individual Mobility (71%): 43% reported trouble moving to restrooms, while 28% struggled to navigate the shelter space.
2. Struggles with Location Awareness (31%): Many found it challenging to identify key areas like food distribution points (18%) and entrances/exits (8%).
3. Lack of Privacy Space (14%)
4. Insufficient Human Support (10%)
5. Inaccessibility of Informational Signage (8%)

An overwhelming 70% of survey respondents expressed the desire for Cocotape to be integrated into evacuation shelters, showcasing its potential as a solution to existing challenges.

Voices from the Visually Impaired Community

Many individuals have shared how the Cocotape would transform their experiences in evacuation shelters. They highlighted that the tape could facilitate easier navigation and provide more autonomy during emergencies. The adaptability of Cocotape allows for quick setup and modification, appealing features that promise to alleviate stress and enhance safety.

As one user stated, "In an unfamiliar shelter, knowing that Cocotape is available significantly reduces anxiety and allows for a more comfortable living environment."

Introducing the Cocotape Evacuation Kit

In response to the research findings, PLAYWORKS has developed the "Cocotape Evacuation Kit," which will be presented at the Sight World event. This kit will address the concerns faced by visually impaired individuals sheltering during disasters, ensuring a supportive environment where they feel secure.

The event will display various use cases for Cocotape and offer a chance for participants to engage in a simulated voting experience adapted for visually impaired users:
1. Cocotape Use Cases: Demonstrations will include scenarios in homes, workplaces, events, and voting locations.
2. Cocotape Evacuation Kit: An introduction to the kit designed to enhance safety during emergencies.
