This significant transition in leadership follows his tenure as the inaugural Vice Chair since 2021 and being a dedicated board member since 2012.
Dean Mark T. Gladwin, M.D., shared his excitement about Mr. Greenebaum's appointment, highlighting the profound impact he has already made within the institution. Greenebaum expressed his deep-rooted connection to UMSOM, recounting personal experiences, including his mother’s treatment at the Maryland Comprehensive Cancer Center and his own journey as a patient. He stated, “I feel so passionate about the goals of this institution, and my real goal is to draw on the strengths and talent of our diverse Board, where we can work together to achieve the greater good.”
A Legacy of Philanthropy and Commitment
Michael Greenebaum, also known for his philanthropic efforts, has a personal stake in the institution's success. His family’s generous contributions include the founding gift for the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center back in 1994. This well-established philanthropy has supported countless lives and advances in medical care.
During his time as Vice Chair, Greenebaum was instrumental in launching crucial initiatives, including the formation of the UMSOM philanthropy team, which aligned the development efforts of both the School of Medicine and the Medical Center. His leadership in the Board's Campaign Committee also led to an impressive fundraising achievement of $6.4 million within a mere two years. He has further demonstrated his commitment as a member of the Innovation Committee, helping to create a philanthropic fund dedicated to supporting emerging technologies.
Vision for Future Growth
With his appointment as Chair, Greenebaum brings a vision for continuing the institution’s legacy of excellence. “I can think of no better leader and dedicated individual to take the helm than Michael Greenebaum,” said Dean Gladwin. Greenebaum’s extensive experience in healthcare and community service, underscored by his role as President of Greenebaum Enterprises, a prominent real estate development firm, positions him uniquely to lead UMSOM into its future.
His strategic leadership has positively influenced Maryland's economic landscape, aligning with his ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare services. As a board member at the UM Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and the founder of the Maryland Half Marathon, which has raised over $8 million for cancer research, Greenebaum embodies a profound commitment to community health.
