Huawei ICT Competition Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Record Participation from Students Worldwide

The 10th Huawei ICT Competition Global Final reached a remarkable milestone this year, gathering over 220,000 university students and faculty members from more than 2,000 institutions across over 100 countries and regions. This unprecedented participation marks the largest edition in the competition's history. The awards ceremony took place in Shenzhen, China, where 177 teams representing 49 countries and regions showcased their remarkable skills after a series of national and regional rounds.

At the closing event, Ritchie (Honghua) Peng, the head of ICT strategy and business development at Huawei, emphasized the company's commitment to utilizing technology for the greater good and promoting sustainable social and ecological development. He stated that the competition exemplified the value of competitive learning as a tool to tackle real-world challenges. Participants demonstrated their dedication, curiosity, and deep technical focus, highlighting their exceptional abilities.

In a significant announcement for the next edition, an new Ascend AI Operator Development Track will be introduced in mainland China. This initiative aims to engage young developers in advanced industrial technologies through practical challenges, further enhancing the competitive landscape of the competition.

Dr. Shafika Isaacs, the Acting Director of the UNESCO Institute for Information Technology in Education, praised the collaboration between UNESCO and Huawei, commending the participants for their outstanding achievements. She stressed the importance of cooperation among governments, international organizations, academia, and industry for the future of AI. Dr. Isaacs noted that initiatives like AI capacity-building programs in Arab states and ICT education partnership programs in Central Asia and the Caucasus are pivotal in strengthening higher education and vocational training systems.

Among the many highlights, 18 exceptional teams from eight countries received top honors in various categories, including practical, innovation, and programming contests. Notably, teams from Algeria, Brazil, and Nigeria won the Grand Prize in the Network Track, while the Cloud Track prize was claimed by teams from Egypt and Kenya, among others.

Special recognition was given during the ceremony as well, with the Women in Tech Award awarded to seven female teams from Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Kenya, China, and Bahrain. The Green Development Award was earned by teams from Ghana and China, signaling a commitment to eco-friendly solutions. Additionally, ten students from China were given Fast Passes for the Huawei Future Business Leader Track, providing them with valuable career opportunities.

The Most Valuable Instructor Award was granted to 16 exceptional educators from nine different countries, recognizing their vital contribution to nurturing the next generation of technologists. Six teams also received the ICT Competition Online Popularity Award, showcasing their popularity and engagement in the digital sphere.

To further emphasize its mission, Huawei hosted the AI Accelerating Education Transformation Summit during the Global Final, where it launched the ICT Academy AI Course Solution. The summit also featured the release of the ICT Skills Development Insight Report, delivering recommendations for nine countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus to advance their educational frameworks.

With the demand for talent in artificial intelligence, computing, big data, and cybersecurity continuing to rise, the Huawei ICT Competition serves as an international platform for students to hone practical skills, address real-world challenges, and prepare for the digital economy through enhanced cooperation between industry and academia. This celebration of innovation, diversity, and collaboration in the tech sphere sets a promising tone for the future of ICT education across the globe.
