Bittium Wireless Partners with Indra Group to Enhance SDR Technology Capabilities
Strategic License Agreement with Indra Group
Bittium Wireless Ltd, a key subsidiary of Bittium Corporation, has recently entered into a significant licensing agreement with Spanish defense and technology giant, Indra Group. This collaboration centers on the licensing of Bittium’s Tough Software-Defined Radio (SDR) technology, which has been recognized for its reliability and performance in tactical communication systems.
The agreement, announced on December 29, 2025, includes a notable initial purchase order worth EUR 50 million from Indra. This order is expected to have a beneficial impact on Bittium's financial outlook for the year 2025. Remarkably, the agreement is projected to reach an additional estimated value of EUR 70 million over its development during the next decade, contingent on successful implementation as per current forecasts.
Development of Sovereign Tactical Solutions
Under this new partnership, Indra aims to utilize Bittium’s Tough SDR technology for developing and manufacturing advanced high-performance communication devices, including handheld, vehicular, and manpack radios. This initiative is primarily focused on addressing the needs of Spain’s defense sector but holds potential for extensions to other nations looking for sovereign solutions in tactical communications.
Bittium remains dedicated to the global development and supply of its own tactical communication products and radios, maintaining an extensive portfolio that includes modular communication systems designed for secure communications across various military domains. The technology has already been successfully implemented in multiple countries, such as Finland, Estonia, Austria, and Croatia, thus enhancing their military communication networks.
Commitment to Secure Communications
Bittium boasts a rich background in software-defined radio technology combined with state-of-the-art security software solutions. This reflects its commitment to providing clients, including governments and public authorities, with secure communication means. The range of products enables users to maintain effective communication regardless of the operational environment, thus reinforcing national defense strategies.
Petri Toljamo, CEO of Bittium Corporation, expressed enthusiastic sentiments regarding the agreement, emphasizing the confidence it reflects in their SDR technology's excellence. The agreement marks a transformative step in their business model, allowing for the licensing of their technology to countries seeking independent tactical communication solutions. This expansion is expected to broaden Bittium's global footprint significantly, especially in collaboration with trusted defense industry players like Indra.
Background and Strategic Collaboration
This licensing agreement follows an earlier announcement made on July 18, 2025, regarding a Letter of Intent for strategic cooperation between Bittium and Indra concerning Bittium's SDR technology. Notably, prior to this agreement, Bittium and Indra have collaborated within the a4ESSOR joint venture, which consists of prominent European tactical communications providers. This collaboration aims to form ESSOR waveforms, facilitating interoperability across armed forces, a standard which has gained NATO's endorsement.
Looking Ahead
With Bittium's secure communication solutions already utilized in more than 50 countries worldwide, this partnership presents an opportunity to enhance defense capabilities through innovative technology. The deployment of Tough SDR technology will empower Indra to contribute significantly to Spain’s military communications landscape, ultimately supporting endeavors aimed at national security and defense resilience.
As the global landscape of defense technologies continues to evolve, Bittium’s partnership with Indra signifies a promising advancement towards modernizing and securing military communications on a broader scale.
