Supporting International Aid Through Used Stamps

On September 5, the United Nations observes International Charity Day, commemorating Mother Teresa, a symbol of dedication to aiding those in need. It’s a day meant to deepen understanding of charitable activities and encourage participation globally. In this context, SHARE, a civic group focused on international health cooperation, will host an online event titled "120kg of Stamps Supporting International Cooperation: Connecting to East Timor through Our Charity" on September 8. What Does 120kg of Used Stamps Mean?

Every year, SHARE receives approximately 120kg of used stamps from across Japan—an amount that supports various charitable activities. In the Tokyo office, volunteers dedicate their time every Tuesday to meticulously organize each stamp. This might seem like a simple task, yet it forms a crucial part of the charity efforts supporting SHARE's activities. International programs involve a collaborative ecosystem—their success relies not solely on those on the ground but also on a network of volunteers, communication efforts, and connections with supporters.

During the upcoming online event, SHARE will introduce its school health initiatives in East Timor while shedding light on the often-overlooked “invisible work” that underpins international cooperation.

For anyone who’s thought “I can’t contribute to international cooperation unless I go abroad,” this 90-minute session aims to illuminate that there are many ways for you to get involved.

Meet Our Speakers:

Asuka Suenaga (SHARE Support Services)
Asuka ventured into SHARE through an internship at our Cambodia office during college and officially joined the organization in 2016. Currently, she facilitates communication with supporters and manages correspondence and reporting. Asuka’s role is to be a bridge connecting supporters' wishes with field activities, ensuring the sustainability of our initiatives.

This session will also highlight various charities in Japan that support international cooperation by sharing insights from the "Tuesday Volunteers" in Tokyo, who help organize used stamps for donation. We will discuss how each participant's contribution in Japan tangibly aids activities on foreign soil, revealing the intricate behind-the-scenes work involved.

Hidetaro Sunai (SHARE East Timor Office Representative)
With 18 years in international cooperation and over a decade of experience in NGOs, Hidetaro has been stationed in East Timor since 2021. He collaborates with local staff, community members, schools, health workers, and government bodies, overseeing diverse responsibilities from project creation to evaluation and office management.

During the event, Hidetaro will share insights from the ground in East Timor, focusing on the tangible benefits of charity and support. By utilizing photographs and stories, he will paint a picture of health education initiatives aimed at empowering children to manage their own health effectively.
