Supporting Ukrainian Refugee Students in Pursuit of Education and Global Peace

In a commendable initiative, Sekigin LLC, based in Minato, Tokyo, has launched a support program targeting Ukrainian refugee students. Effective from May 2025, the program focuses on providing Lisa Resetchko, a refugee, access to an English learning program tailored for her goal of working on peace activities within the United Nations.

Lisa Resetchko, who was originally a high school student from Kyiv, Ukraine, had always aspired to become a medical professional. Supported by her lawyer father and beauty therapist mother, she led a peaceful life until the outbreak of war in 2023 forced her to flee her home country. Relocating to Japan with her family, she enrolled in high school in Saga Prefecture while hoping for a return to her homeland. However, as circumstances deteriorated, Lisa faced the grim reality that pursuing higher education in Ukraine had become increasingly improbable.

Driven by her tumultuous experiences, Lisa developed a new aspirational goal. She now dreams of engaging in peace promotion efforts at international organizations, including the United Nations. To achieve this objective, she recognizes the need to pursue studies in international law or international relations at prestigious Western universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, or Harvard, which necessitates proficient language skills coupled with advanced academic knowledge.

Determined to attain this goal, Lisa set her sights on applying for scholarships to continue her studies at Japanese universities, although she discovered a lack of support programs designed for students aiming to enroll in overseas institutions. Most initiatives for Ukrainian refugees in Japan have thus far been limited to domestic educational opportunities and employment.

Responding to this gap, Lisa's support team has introduced her to the ELT English program, which boasts a 40-year track record of successful admissions to top-tier universities. However, even after realizing the value of her online lessons, she found herself financially strained when it came time to cover the costs of further preparation leading to university entrance exams.

Upon unveiling her aspirations and the financial hurdles she faced to her instructor during a trial lesson, ELT's operational company, Sekigin LLC, decided to step in. They made history by offering a full scholarship for the English-learning program aimed at international university admissions—a first of its kind in Japan.

The support extended to Lisa includes:
  • - IELTS preparation lessons delivered by native instructors, including former IELTS examiners.
  • - Assistance in crafting essays for international university applications.
  • - Interview preparation sessions.
  • - A laptop computer for online learning.
  • - Job placement support for tutoring to help with living expenses and tuition fees.

Under the guidance of ELT's elite instructors, Lisa is now diligently preparing for her university applications. She has expressed her heartfelt gratitude and resolve during this challenging journey:

"I am endlessly grateful for the warm support from everyone at ELT and all the opportunities I have received in Japan. Experiencing war has not only reshaped my life but also awakened a profound sense of justice and desire for peace. Therefore, I aspire to study international law at prestigious institutions like Oxford or Cambridge so that I can work at international organizations and defend the rights of vulnerable individuals. I am committed to making the most of every opportunity and contributing to building a fairer and more peaceful world."

Lisa's instructor, Catherine Furneaux, has also praised her abilities and dedication. As an accomplished educator, Catherine highlighted Lisa's passion for learning and her natural linguistic talent, stating:

"From the moment I began teaching Lisa, I recognized her linguistic potential immediately. She has fully immersed herself in the IELTS preparation course, absorbing idiomatic expressions and employing them effectively in conversation. I am proud of her achievements and confident that further professional success awaits her."

Founded in 1984, ELT English takes pride in fostering the growth of individuals through high-quality English education. With a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to assisting students while pitching global opportunities, Sekigin LLC believes that their support for Lisa will pave the way for her successful admission to an international university and a future working for global peace. They focus on utilizing technology and human resources to enrich lives through their educational endeavors.
