American Battery Factory Collaborates with KAN Battery
In a significant development for the U.S. battery manufacturing landscape, American Battery Factory Inc. (ABF) has announced a collaboration with KAN Battery Co., Ltd., aimed at refining the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells. This partnership is a crucial step toward establishing a domestic supply chain for battery cells in the United States, particularly as ABF prepares for the launch of its gigafactory in Tucson, Arizona.
Innovative Production Plans
Under this partnership, ABF is set to develop a pilot production line at its facility, aimed at accelerating the integration of world-class technology and practices into its operations. The collaboration will encompass comprehensive training for ABF's workforce in advanced analytics and machining techniques, enabling them to refine the entire battery production process.
At KAN Battery’s facility in China, ABF will utilize a high-capacity 1 GWh factory line that is specifically designed for producing prismatic battery cells with outputs ranging from 105 to 300 ampere-hours (Ah). This expansive 750,000 square-foot facility allows for immediate scaling of production, which is essential as the company gears up for its initial U.S. production capabilities.
ABF is committed to innovating its battery chemistry to ensure that its UL-certified cells are both safe and efficient. The company aims to introduce production processes that will aid in creating cells lasting up to 10,000 life cycles or an impressive 20 to 30 years under normal usage conditions.
Vision of Energy Independence
Founded on the mission to create a robust domestic LFP battery supply chain, ABF recognizes the need to leverage global best practices in battery manufacturing. Jim Ge, the CEO of American Battery Factory, emphasized the importance of learning from industry leaders to enhance their manufacturing processes leading up to their launch in the U.S. “Our partnership with KAN Battery is an opportunity to learn from world-class manufacturers,” he stated, outlining the benefits this alliance will bring ahead of ABF's market entry.
ABF's strategic move not only addresses potential delays typically associated with scaling up production but also reinforces its commitment to building a reliable domestic supply chain for battery cells. This initiative is expected to significantly shorten the timeline for the completion of its first gigafactory phase, originally projected for the latter half of 2026.
Commitment to Sustainable Practices
As part of its ambitious plans, the Tucson facility will house ABF’s headquarters, a research and development center, and an initial production module capable of producing up to 4 GWh of battery capacity. The company's focus on environmentally friendly design and safe chemistry underlines its commitment to sustainability and innovation in battery technology.
John Kem, ABF's president, highlighted the collaborative approach needed to catch up in the competitive battery market: “The United States is about 10 years behind the leaders of battery production. We must partner with the best in the world to develop a robust domestic supply.”
As ABF China officially launches, the subsidiary will focus on research and limited production, serving as a testing ground that validates its approach while enabling the company to supply selected battery cells to partners like Lion Energy, in preparation for full-scale operations in the U.S.
The relationship between KAN Battery and Lion Energy, a long-standing partnership, will play a crucial role as they work together to enhance battery accessibility in the market. Zheyu Jin, the CEO of KAN Battery, emphasized the strategic nature of their collaboration with ABF, aiming to expand their impact in the burgeoning U.S. battery storage market.
Looking Ahead
ABF is poised to crucially contribute to U.S. energy independence by meeting the increasing demand for locally manufactured LFP batteries, thereby supporting various sectors including utilities, telecommunications, and defense.
