EQT Expands Footprint in the Middle East with New Abu Dhabi Office Launch
EQT Launches Middle East Platform and Office in Abu Dhabi
EQT, a prominent player in the global private market investment sector, has announced the introduction of its Middle East platform along with a newly established office in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). This strategic initiative reflects EQT’s unwavering commitment to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region and its determination to strengthen its presence within the rapidly evolving economic landscape.
The choice of Abu Dhabi as a hub is no coincidence. The city is recognized for its robust financial ecosystem, comprehensive regulatory framework, and privileged position as a connector of global investments. With this new office opening, EQT aims to foster closer engagements with investors and corporations throughout the GCC, tapping into long-standing relationships built over more than ten years.
The new platform is set to bolster support for existing portfolio companies while also pursuing novel investment opportunities that align with the region's ambitious economic transformation objectives. With a deep understanding of the GCC, EQT is well-positioned to navigate the distinct priorities and dynamics of each market within the council.
GCC economies continue to play a significant role in global economic development, driven by a commitment to national agendas that prioritize sectors such as healthcare, education, digital technology, energy transition, and infrastructure. These focus areas resonate with EQT’s thematic investment strategies and underscore the firm’s confidence in the region’s potential for growth.
EQT’s portfolio already includes well-established entities in the region. Companies such as Nord Anglia Education and Virtusa have been operating here for over a decade, demonstrating EQT's familiarity with regional investment landscapes. Establishing a dedicated local platform will enhance the support EQT can provide to these companies as well as others looking to expand their footprint within the GCC.
At the helm of EQT's new Middle East platform is Jimmy Mahtani, who serves as Chairman of GCC while also leading EQT's operations in India and Southeast Asia. He will work alongside Smiyet Belrhiti, who has been appointed Senior Executive Officer and Head of the Middle East Office. Smiyet brings over 20 years of experience across private equity and corporate development within the GCC, having cultivated extensive relationships with key institutional investors and business leaders in the region.
Jean Eric Salata, Chair of EQT Group, remarked on the company’s long-standing relationships in Abu Dhabi, emphasizing the critical importance of local engagement in bolstering EQT’s commitment to the GCC. The launch also aligns EQT’s capabilities with its extensive investment experience, creating a unified approach across its various operations.
Furthermore, Per Franzén, the CEO of EQT, expressed enthusiasm about the growth potential within the GCC, highlighting Jimmy Mahtani's leadership as instrumental for success. He noted significant opportunities for supporting existing investments as well as for strategic new ventures that align with the structural transformations occurring across vital industry sectors.
Abu Dhabi’s recognized status as a growing financial hub will further enhance EQT’s capabilities as it seeks to tap into the lucrative pool of prospective investments. H.E. Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of ADGM, welcomed EQT's presence, indicating that the firm’s commitment bolsters Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a premier destination for global capital.
As EQT commences its operations in Abu Dhabi, the new office signifies a pivotal step in the company’s efforts to cultivate a local presence while maintaining access to its comprehensive global resources. The integration of teams specializing in Private Capital, Infrastructure, and capital raising reflects the firm’s commitment to a cohesive and collaborative approach to investment.
In celebrating this milestone, Smiyet Belrhiti voiced confidence in the opportunities present in the Middle East, expressing that the firm is dedicated to becoming a reliable, long-term partner in the region’s growth journey. EQT's establishment in Abu Dhabi marks another chapter in the firm’s expansive journey, continuing to reaffirm its position as a leading entity in private equity and infrastructure investment on a global scale.
With the additional office in Abu Dhabi, EQT currently operates in over 25 countries, witnessing a collective representation of more than 80 percent of the world’s GDP, underscoring its influence and extensive reach in the financial industry.
