University of Tulsa Receives $1.5 Million Gift to Enhance Student Innovation and Create Scholarships

University of Tulsa Receives $1.5 Million Windfall

In a recent announcement, the University of Tulsa expressed its heartfelt gratitude for a significant $1.5 million leadership gift from alumni Paul and Kara Coury. This generous donation is set to enhance the educational experience within the Collins College of Business, specifically through a planned renovation of Helmerich Hall and the establishment of a new endowed scholarship fund.

Transformational Donation Overview

The $1.5 million contribution is divided into two primary components. The largest portion of $1.3 million will be allocated toward expanding the JOLT Lounge, a space designed for experiential and co-curricular learning. This innovative hub is directly linked to the university's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, aiming to create environments that foster creativity and collaboration among students. In recognition of the Coury family's generosity, the renovated facility will be honored as The Paul Coury Family JOLT Lounge.

In addition, the Courys have pledged $200,000 to endow the Paul Coury Family Scholarship Fund. This fund is specifically aimed at supporting full-time undergraduate students within the business program, with a preference for those minoring in innovation and entrepreneurship or real estate.

Coury’s Contribution to Education

Paul Coury, who graduated with a B.S.B.A. in 1982, is not only the founder and CEO of Coury Hospitality but also credits his entrepreneurial spirit and passion for real estate to the mentorship he received at the University of Tulsa. During his time as a student, he was guided by Larry Wofford, the Davis D. Bovaird Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies. Today, Coury Hospitality boasts a portfolio of over 35 award-winning hotels and restaurants across various states, showcasing the fruitful career that began at UTulsa.

In his own words, Paul Coury expressed, "UTulsa provided the foundation for my career and entrepreneurial spirit. Kara and I are honored to give back in a way that helps future students discover their potential and pursue their dreams." This statement highlights the Courys' commitment to ensuring that other students have similar opportunities for success.

Impact on Learning Environment

The plans for the JOLT Lounge renovations align with the university's strategic goals aimed at creating modern, flexible learning environments that encourage innovation and teamwork. The interim president of UTulsa, Rick Dickson, highlighted the far-reaching effects of the Courys' generosity, stating, "The Courys embody the pioneering mindset that defines UTulsa. Their generosity strengthens our commitment to developing creative business leaders and enhances JOLT's role as a launchpad for the next generation of changemakers."

A Larger Movement

This initiative is part of UTulsa's broader campaign titled "Minds. Momentum. Mission." The campaign aims to transform the educational journey for students by prioritizing fundraising for scholarships and other initiatives that pave the way for impactful careers and meaningful contributions to society.

The Courys' contribution serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for current and prospective students at the University of Tulsa, illustrating the power of giving back to the community and investing in the future of education.

With this generous support, the University of Tulsa continues to solidify its reputation as a hub for nurturing innovative thinkers and aspiring entrepreneurs, paving the way for future generations to thrive in their selected fields and beyond.
