Okayama University Hosts Symposium on Forest-Based Circular Economy



On December 22, 2025, Okayama University organized a public symposium titled "Towards Realizing a Forest-Based Circular Economy from Okayama" at the university's Tsushima Campus. This event, co-hosted with the Platinum Network Association, attracted approximately 250 participants, including corporate representatives, government officials, and students. The discussions centered on leveraging forest resources to promote a regional circular economy focused on sustainability.

The symposium commenced with a keynote speech by Hiroshi Komiyama, Chairman of the Platinum Network Association and President of Mitsubishi Research Institute. His presentation titled, "Achieving a Forest-Based Circular Economy to Transform Japan into a 'Platinum Society'" set the tone for the event. Following this, the Vice President of Okayama University, Masanobu Abe, presented on the theme of creating a decarbonized society through timber construction, emphasizing the university's commitment to this vision.

A panel discussion followed, which included various experts in forestry and regional development. The panel members included Yoshihiko Tahara, Executive Director of Injo Forestry Co., Miya Saito, Head of the Forestry Division in Okayama’s Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, and several others from both industry and government sectors. They engaged in an enriching dialogue about the importance of promoting timber construction, utilizing local wood resources, and revitalizing the forestry industry collaboratively.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the insights shared during the panel. Many noted that specific examples of local material utilization were particularly inspiring and highlighted the necessity for a unified approach among academia, industry, and government to form the "Okayama Model". The discussions underscored a renewed recognition of the significance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders involved in sustainable regional development.

The symposium ultimately emphasized the need for innovation and cooperation to harness the potential of local forest resources effectively. As Okayama University continues to drive initiatives supporting a sustainable society, expectations grow for its future endeavors.
